Questions & Answers
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are a delightful breed of dog that have been around since as far back as the 1600s. They were originally bred as lapdogs and companions for royalty and nobility. The breed developed its distinct personalities over time, including being loving, affectionate, loyal, and fearless. Fun facts about Cavalier King Charles Spaniels include that their ears were once purposely bred to be longer to make them look more attractive. Cavaliers are easy to groom and don’t require much exercise. They were one of the first breeds to be recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1996.
Cavaliers King Charles are known for their appealing temperament and the non-shedding quality of their coats. This breed of small spaniels is considered to be low shedding which makes them favorable to those with allergies, and families who prefer to keep their homes clean. Their long, silky hair requires regular brushing to remove dead hair and mats. They may still shed some loose hair, but it is usually minimal and quickly vacuumed up. Cavaliers also require an occasional bath and regular trimming to maintain their beautiful look.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel dogs thrive on high-quality diets, consisting of both dry and wet, grain-free foods specifically designed for small breeds. To ensure their health and longevity, it is important to feed them foods with the right amounts of vitamins, minerals, and fatty acids. Avoid foods with artificial additives, such as ones with excess sodium, and low-quality ingredients. Fresh fruits and vegetables can also be given as supplemental treats, but should be calibrated to your pup's individual needs, as too many will affect their digestion and overall health.
Before welcoming a Cavalier King Charles into your home, it's important to make sure your house is prepared for them. Make sure all toxic chemicals, small objects, and other hazards are removed and stored in child-proofed areas and out of reach. Keep electrical cords tucked away, block off stairs, and adjust any furniture that is low to the ground. If you have an outdoor space, make sure any toxic plants are removed. Research the best water, food, toys, and bedding options and stock up to meet your pup's needs.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels come in three different size varieties: toy, miniature, and standard. The standard Cavalier King Charles has a height of up to 13 inches and a weight of up to 18 pounds. The miniature size Cavalier King Charles stands at a maximum height of 12 inches and a maximum weight of up to 13 pounds. Finally, the toy size, which is the smallest of the three, stands up to 10 inches tall and weighs up to 9 pounds. Depending on their intended purpose, breeders will breed animals to fit one of the three size varieties.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are a highly active breed that require plenty of exercise to stay healthy and fit. Generally, for adult dogs, the American Kennel Club recommends 30 to 45 minutes of exercise per day that includes a combination of moderate, sustained activity, such as a walk, run, or play session, as well as short bursts of higher-intensity activities, such as fetching a ball. It's important not to overexert your dog, though, and observers should recognize the signs of exhaustion in their Cavalier.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels make wonderful family pets that tend to get along very well with children. They have a sweet, gentle nature that makes it easy to form strong and trusting relationships with both adults and kids alike. Cavaliers are intelligent, easy to train, and tend to be playful and affectionate with their families. In addition, their small sizes make them well suited for younger children. Although Cavaliers may bark to defend their territory, they become quickly accustomed to members of their household, and tend to be a calming presence for kids during stressful times.
Training a Cavalier King Charles is an important part of owning this wonderful breed. The amount of time needed to train your pup daily will vary and depend largely on your goals. Generally, you should aim to give your Cavalier at least 10 to 15 minutes of dedicated training time each day. Ideally, however, you should strive to spend more than that, around 20 to 30 minutes per day to ensure progress and long-term results. It's also important to include plenty of playtime and exercise into your daily routine, as this will keep your pup healthy and happy.
