Questions & Answers
French Bulldogs, often referred to as "Frenchie's", are a small companion breed. They typically weigh less than 28 pounds and have a stocky appearance with wide heads and a short, wide muzzle. They are classified as non-sporting dogs and form a part of the brachycephalic, or short-faced, breed. Their short noses often give them unique looks and make them easily recognizable. French Bulldogs are an easily trainable breed and, when cared for properly, are known to be loving and loyal companions. They are very sociable and often make great family pets.
French Bulldog coats come in a variety of colors, including brindle, white, cream, fawn, and speckled. They feature a medium length, smooth coat with wrinkles and roll on the back and head. It is important to brush the fur often since it can become easily matted and tangled. The French Bulldog coat does not shed a lot, however regular grooming is a must to keep their coat healthy and in beautiful condition. To promote healthy skin, the coats should be washed regularly and dried thoroughly with a soft towel.
An adult French Bulldog should be fed a high-quality dry dog food that is specifically designed for their breed. You should look for a food that has the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) seal. A French Bulldog's diet should also include a variety of proteins like beef, chicken, liver, and fish. If you are feeding a puppy, you should use a formula that's made specifically for puppies, as it will have the right amounts of proteins and fats to support their growth.
French Bulldogs, like any other dog breed, do have special requirements to ensure they stay healthy and happy. These requirements are typically related to exercise, diet, health care, and grooming. Since Frenchies are a relatively small breed of dog, they have unique needs when it comes to exercise and diet. Exercise should be tailored to meet their individual needs depending on their size, age, or health condition. Diet should include appropriate food that meets their calorie and food group requirements, since they can be prone to gaining weight.
French Bulldogs typically come in two standard sizes small and standard. Depending on where you live, they may be considered either a "miniature" or a "micro miniature" variety. The official breed standard states that the height of an adult French Bulldog should be between 11-13 inches for the small variety and 14-16 inches for the standard variety. The weight of an adult French Bulldog also varies according to size, with the small variety averaging between 16-24 pounds and the standard variety averaging between 26-28 pounds.
French Bulldogs require a moderate amount of exercise; however, due to their small size and short legs they are not built for longer or strenuous activities. Daily walks in a secure area will help ensure they receive enough exercise and help to prevent destruction of furniture, carpets, and other household items that would result from a bored or inactive pet. Participating in activities such as playing fetch or agility courses are great ways to provide your French Bulldog with mental and physical stimulation. It should also be noted that all ages and sizes are susceptible to heat exhaustion and should not be taken lightly.
Generally speaking, French Bulldogs tend to be friendly and sociable animals that get along well with other pets. Although some individual French Bulldogs may differ, most Frenchies enjoy being around other animals. That includes other dogs, cats, birds, and even small mammals such as rabbits. However, it is important to remember to always supervise them and introduce them slowly to any new animals. Proper socialization, along with plenty of patience and positive reinforcement, can go a long way in helping your Frenchie develop good relationships with other animals.
Training a French Bulldog can be achievable, but it does take patience and consistency. As with any breed, good behaviour must be reinforced and rewarded. There are some things to keep in mind with French Bulldogs, as they tend to be a bit more stubborn than other breeds. French Bulldog's are smart dogs, and they can pick up on any inconsistency. So, teaching commands in a consistent way is important. As with any breed, positive reinforcement is key when training a French Bulldog. Try to use treats and praise when they do something correctly.
