Questions & Answers
A Labradoodle is a hybrid dog created by crossing a Labrador Retriever with a Poodle. This designer dog was designed to bring together the best of the two breeds, specifically the intelligence and low-shedding coat of the Poodle and the outgoing, sociable, and loyal nature of the Labrador Retriever. Labradoodles come in a variety of colors and sizes, although Miniature or Toy Labradoodles weigh less than 30 lbs and Standard Labradoodles can weigh anywhere between 30-60 lbs.
Labradoodles are often considered hypoallergenic because of the combination of two hypoallergenic breeds, the Labrador Retriever and the Poodle. While no dog can be completely hypoallergenic, the Labradoodle's hypoallergenic traits are appealing to many owners. Generally, the Labradoodle produces less dander and a minimal amount of saliva, which helps reduce the amount of allergen for people with allergies.
Labradoodles should not be fed chocolate, candy, grapes, raisins, onions, chives, leeks, garlic, macadamia nuts, coffee, or tea. These items can be toxic to their digestive system and can cause serious problems, including vomiting, dehydration, and even death. It is also important to feed Labradoodles a diet that is balanced and specifically designed for their breeder or is a veterinary-grade, age-appropriate diet that meets their nutritional requirements to help keep them healthy.
Before bringing your new Labradoodle home, there are a few things you should do to prepare your house. Start by investing in some great supplies for your pup. Get a long-lasting food bowl, a comfortable bed, several toys, grooming materials and a safe crate. Make these items available in safe areas such as the kitchen and common areas where you want to spend time with the dog. You should also consider reinforcing furniture and other objects that might get scraped, scratched or knocked over. Baby gates are also a great way to ensure the pup’s safety while keeping their area restricted.
Labradoodles are estimated to come in 3 main sizes: the standard size (21-24 inches tall and 45-70 pounds), the medium size (17-20 inches tall and 30-45 pounds), and the miniature size (14-16 inches tall and 15-25 pounds). With a Poodle parent and Labrador Retriever parent, the temperament and coat quality from each breed will certainly be different. Generally, most Labradoodles have an average life expectancy of 10-13 years. Keep in mind that with mixed breeds, the variability in size and coat type can vary.
Labradoodles typically need a moderate amount of exercise each day. They should get 1-2 hours of exercise per day, including both physical activities like walking or running and mental activities like playing fetch or training activities. It's important to give Labradoodles plenty of opportunities for physical and mental stimulation in order to keep them healthy and happy. In addition to daily exercise, Labradoodles should have regular trips to the veterinarian and groomer to make sure their physical and mental wellbeing is on the right track.
Labradoodles are known to be excellent additions to households with kids. They are friendly and intelligent, making them naturally patient with children. Labradoodles have an abundance of energy and are always ready to play and bring a smile to kids' faces. They are also known to be loyal, protective and even-tempered, and are often more than willing to engage in activities with the whole family. Labradoodles need proper, consistent training from early on to make sure that they are well-behaved with children, as any pet should be.
Training a Labradoodle is certainly not an easy task but can be manageable if it is done in a methodical, consistent manner. Knowing the breed's natural tendencies is important, as it will help you to structure exercises and tasks to help shape the desired behaviour. Clear limits, positive reinforcement, consistency, and having patience are all essential components of having an obedient pup. It is also very important to ensure that your Labradoodle is regularly challenged mentally and physically, as these breeds can become destructive and difficult if they are not given enough activities to keep occupied.
