Questions & Answers
Pomskies are an interesting and exciting breed to learn about. They are a cross between a Pomeranian and a Siberian Husky, creating a small, loving, and loyal companion. Pomskies require a lot of love and attention and can be high maintenance if they don't receive enough exercise. Despite this, they make for very devoted and protective pets that have an even-tempered personality. They are also very intelligent and quick to learn, as well as having excellent puppy potty hip and crate training skills.
Pomskies have a lovely coat—thick, fluffy fur that radiates softness and warmth. Depending on the dog, the coat may range from cream and white to cinnamon black. The length may vary, too, from short to medium length hair. Pomskies often have a thick undercoat, making them double-coated and ideal for cold weather. Shedding is minimal because their coats are so short and dense. Shampoo and brushing are all a part of the regular grooming routine for a Pomsky.
Pomskies should not be fed anything containing xylitol, which is an artificial sweetener found in many sugar-free products that can be toxic to canine companions. Additionally, chocolate, onions, garlic, caffeine, grapes, raisins, fatty meats, and undercooked meat should also be avoided as they can all be dangerous and even life-threatening when ingested by a Pomksy. Avoid feeding your Pomsky anything made with uncooked grains, seeds, beans, and peanuts as these can cause digestive distress and even intestinal blockage.
Becoming the best puppy parent for a Pomsky requires commitment and dedication. It is important to understand the breed's tendencies and temperament, and develop an appropriate structure of rules and expectations. To ensure a well-rounded and healthy puppy, it is important to get them used to interacting with people and animals as soon as possible. Mental stimulation is important for a puppy's development, so taking time to play fetch with toys can go a long way. Grooming is another necessity to keep your Pomsky looking and feeling their best, so be vigilant with their coat and ears once they start getting longer.
Pomskies vary in size, since they are a hybrid breed. Some can be considered small, while others will fall into the range of big breeds. Some could even be considered medium sized. Primarily it comes down to the parent breeds, a Pomeranian and a Siberian Husky. Generally, however, Pomskies are about 10 to 15 inches tall and weigh about 15 to 30 pounds, with some potential to reach up to 40 pounds. On average, most people would answer the question "Are Pomskies considered big dogs?" with a "no.
Pomskies definitely enjoy swimming! They are a hybrid between a Pomeranian and a Siberian husky, and with a bit of training, Pomskies tend to love the water. This is partly thanks to the husky heritage in the breed, which makes them natural swimmers. Pomskies do need to be closely monitored when swimming and adequately trained to ensure they're safe in and out of the water. With the right guidance, most Pomskies will eagerly join their owners for a swim.
Pomskies are great companions for first-time pet owners because they are highly intelligent, loyal, and relatively low-maintenance. They have relatively short coats, so they don’t require much brushing or other grooming. They also don’t need a lot of exercise, and they can adjust to most situations, making them especially suitable for those just starting out on their pet owning journey. It’s best to give them plenty of one-on-one attention including dog obedience training and plenty of stimulating activities in order to keep them happy and healthy.
Training a Pomsky requires patience, consistency, and positive reinforcement. Start with the basics by teaching your Pomsky their name, basic commands such as 'sit', 'stay', 'come', and 'down'. You should also use treats to reward your Pomsky for good behavior and correct bad behavior without resorting to harsh methods. It is important to be consistent with your commands and expectations; if you give a certain command with one hand gesture then don't change it the next time.
