Questions & Answers
Poodles come in three varieties – toy, miniature, and standard. Despite the common misconception that poodles are strictly French dogs, they actually come from Germany and have been around since the 15th century. They were originally bred to be water retrievers, hence their affinity for swimming. Fun fact – poodles come in over 4o different coat colors and pattern combinations, making them one of the most diverse toy and miniature dog breeds. They are also highly intelligent, intuitive, and obedient and, as with all dogs, enjoy a challenging game of fetch.
Poodles are known for their luxurious coats; they have a single layer of thick, curly fur that forms an attractive silhouette. Their coats come in a variety of colors such as white, black, cream, blue, silver, gray, brown, apricot, and red. Poodles have a double-coat comprising of a curly outer coat that is thick and water-resistant and an inner coat that is soft and dense. Their coat requires regular combing and brushing, and occasionally clipping and trimming of the fur to ensure its health and hygiene.
Poodles require a high-quality diet that usually consists of high-protein dry dog food. Many vets recommend an all-natural diet that contains unprocessed meats, grains, and vegetables. Poodles can also benefit from the occasional addition of cooked meats, eggs, and fresh fruits and vegetables. Supplementation with vitamins and minerals may be necessary for optimal health. While processed or canned foods can provide convenience, these foods often contain highly-processed carbohydrates, low-quality proteins, and artificial ingredients.
Preparing your home for your new Poodle requires some thoughtful planning. Start by creating a safe, enclosed space for your pup to spend time in, away from any potential hazards. Set aside a specific area for food, water, and bedding. Make sure any furniture or equipment that requires assembly, such as a crate, is thoroughly put together and placed in the designated area. Check your home for any hazardous objects such as small pieces, detachable parts, and dangling objects that may harm your pup in any way.
Poodles are considered a medium-to-large size breed of dog and come in three different varieties based on their height. Miniature Poodles typically reach heights of 10 to 15 inches, while Standard Poodles stand as tall as 15 to 24 inches. Lastly, the Giant Poodle can reach heights of up to 25 to 27 inches. While their sizes may vary, Poodles generally tend to weigh between 45 and 70 pounds. As with other breeds, Poodles will always benefit from regular exercise planning and a quality diet to keep them fit and healthy.
Every Poodle’s exercise needs can vary based on their age, size, breed, health, and other factors. Generally speaking, however, it is recommended that all Poodles receive at least 30 minutes of exercise daily. Of those 30 minutes, one-third should be devoted to a brisk walk; the remaining two-thirds can include play time, running, swimming, or a variety of other activities. For a young or larger-breed Poodle, it is important to increase the length of the walk to at least 45 minutes daily.
Poodles can get along very well with kids if properly socialized and trained. They are typically friendly, loving, and eager to please their owners. Generally, Poodles enjoy the companionship of kids and can often become an integral part of the family. With proper socialization and training, Poodles can provide a great deal of joy and happiness into the lives of family members of all ages, especially those with children.
Training a Poodle can be a rewarding experience with the right amount of patience and consistency. There are some distinct benefits to having a Poodle trained, including the decrease of behavioral issues, increased obedience, and the ability to trust the Poodle off-leash in certain situations. With the right approach, training a Poodle can be easy. Begin by establishing alpha status so that you can have control of your pup in more distracting situations. Then, provide consistent basic obedience training and always use positive reinforcement methods.
