Questions & Answers
Poodles are one of the oldest domesticated dog breeds; they were first developed in Germany over 400 years ago! They were originally bred as water retrievers and are still prevalent in water retrievers and other hunting activities. Poodles are also very intelligent, ranking second behind only Border Collies in intelligence tests. Interestingly, they come in three sizes: Standard, Miniature, and Toy. Toy Poodles are often mistaken for Miniature Poodles, however Toy Poodles should weigh less than 10 lbs while Miniature Poodles should not weigh more than 15 lbs.
Poodles are known to be hypoallergenic dogs as they shed minimal fur. Though all breeds shed to some extent, poodles shed much less than other breeds and their coats do not contain the allergens that usually result in allergic reactions. The hypoallergenic nature of poodles is due to their hair-like coats, which don't shed the way other breeds do, and don't release dander or saliva. Poodles also lack an undercoat, which helps significantly with reducing any potential allergy triggers.
Although Poodles are a relatively healthy breed of canine, they do require special dietary considerations in comparison to other breeds. They are prone to pancreatic issues, so it's important to ensure they receive sufficient amounts of proteins, carbohydrates and fiber. Additionally, all-meat diets should be avoided since they can lead to long-term health problems like urinary stones and bladder infections. Poodles should also be given food made with moderate fat content and they should never eat human food or table scraps.
Preparing for a new Poodle means setting your pup up for success. The first step should be obtaining the necessary supplies such as an appropriately sized kennel, food and water bowls, beds, toys, and a leash. Researching the breed's characteristics is also important as some grooming needs may require you to seek out a professional. Additionally, enrolling in a puppy obedience class is a great way to make sure that your pup learns positive socialization skills. A Poodle's diet should include high-quality nutritionally balanced foods.
Your Poodle puppy's ultimate size depends on the size of their parents. The AKC recognizes three size variants of the breed, Toy, Miniature and Standard, which range from 10-15 inches tall and 6-9 pounds all the way up to 15-22 inches tall and 45-70 pounds respectively. If you know the sizes of your pup's parents, you can get a good idea of the size they will mature to. Alternatively, you can consult with your veterinarian regarding expected adult size.
Poodles typically need quite a bit of exercise daily to stay physically and mentally healthy. Generally, they require an hour of physical activity each day to play, walk, or even swim. This physical exercise helps your Poodle build muscle tone and strength, as well as reduces stress. Additionally, regular exercise can help a Poodle maintain a healthy weight. When walking or running with your Poodle, it is important to exercise caution and stay in areas that are safe to play in such as parks, trails, or a fenced-in yard.
Poodles are a great fit for families with their charming, affectionate nature and self-assured intelligence. Their playful personality is sure to make them a lovable addition to any family, while their intelligence makes for an obedient pet—they can even be trained to perform tricks! Not only that, but these highly adaptable pooches look great in any home thanks to their low-shedding coat. Poodles are also capable of bonding with members of all ages, basically making them the ideal canine companion for the entire family.
Poodles are widely known for their intelligence, and rightly so. They are considered to be one of the most intelligent dog breeds, ranking second in Stanley Coren's Intelligence of Dogs only behind the Border Collie. Poodles are recognized for their high ratings of trainability and obedience as well as, their problem solving and communication skills. They have an innate curiosity, eagerness to please, and an impressive capacity for learning new tasks and skills. They retain information quickly and face new problems with confidence, reliably solving them to the best of their ability.
