Of all the wonderful places in Uptown, the best part is that you can always find a great Corgi breeder. The businesses and breeders we work with are true professionals when it comes to taking care of puppies, and many families take their new friend home at the airport so they can focus on finding the perfect pup.
When you turn dog breeding into an industry that profits on cute puppies, there's no room for love in the equation. At mills, Corgis often live in cramped, unsanitary conditions. They go without basic needs and are bred purely for looks and profit, with little regard to your puppy's wellbeing. Puppies from mills can come with genetic health problems (that cost you more money down the road).
The Corgi is a dog that was bred to be a herding animal. They originate from Wales, in the United Kingdom, and excel at herding sheep. Today, Corgis are used less for herding than for their skills at posing for Instagram and starring in memes.
An American Corgi is a cross between a Welsh Corgi and a Cardigan Welsh Corgi. American Corgi breeders are typically striving to produce puppies with the Cardigan Welsh Corgi’s distinctive merle coat pattern, but with the Pembroke’s physical build. As American Corgis are a new designer breed, it is important to only select your puppy from reputable breeder.
The Corgi is a working breed that is intelligent and responsive to training. In fact, Corgis are the happiest when they have a task to focus on and they love to be entertained with puzzles and games throughout the day. However, like any dog, having the right attitude towards training is paramount for success.
When you adopt a puppy from the Uptown Puppies Network, you can be assured that they have been given a comprehensive vet check before they’re available for adoption. This nose-to-tail check not only ensures their health, but gives you peace of mind that your new furry friend has been taken care of. Breeders take their dogs’ welfare very seriously and require new owners to take them to the vet as soon as they arrive at their home.
Do you have the time and energy to provide your Corgi with an extensive daily exercise routine? If so, then there's little reason NOT to get a Corgi. Corgis are fantastic companions to those who love nature, as well as busy families. Instead of asking “should I get a Corgi,” ask yourself “how much time and energy do I have each day?”
Although today, most Corgis are companion dogs, their ancestral origins lie as working dogs. Traditionally, Corgis were bred as cattle herding dogs. Because their tails could easily get caught in the cows' hooves, breeders began docking their tails to keep them safe when on the job. Although this practice has fallen out of favor in recent years, the traditional standard for Pembroke Welsh Corgis maintains that all Corgis' tails be docked.
Corgis are a small breed of dog, so you may think they’d have difficulty climbing stairs. In fact, it’s recommended that you keep your Corgi puppy away from stairs until they’re at least 8 months old and some experts recommend a minimum of one year old. Corgi puppies are still developing and can injure their spines if they try to climb stairs before they are ready.
There's a good chance that your Corgi puppy was born to herding. Left unchecked, Corgis will want to herd all kinds of things, from other pets to small children. Because herding behavior can be discouraged with proper training, most breeders recommend against bringing home a Corgi if you have very young children in your home.
Corgis are a popular breed for dog owners who want to cross breeds with a Corgi. This is because the crosses tend to produce puppies with the characteristic stubby legs that we know and love. Crossing breeds with a Corgi can also result in some very unique combinations, such as the Coroodle (Poodle + Corgi) and Corgle (Beagle + Corgi). However, there are dozens more possible combinations!
