Questions & Answers
Aussiedoodles are a crossbreed, combining the traits of an Australian Shepherd and a Poodle. They are usually medium in size, with a generally friendly, outgoing temperament and are highly trainable and eager to please. They often shed little to no hair, making them a great choice for those with allergies. Aussiedoodles thrive on human interaction, and can be quite loyal and devoted to their owners. With regular exercise and mental stimulation, they make great family pets.
Aussiedoodles can be hypoallergenic if they are bred in a way to reduce allergens, such as using hypoallergenic parent dogs. In most cases, the breeding of an Aussiedoodle with two non-shedding parent breeds will result in a pup that produces fewer allergens, subsequently making them more hypoallergenic when compared to other breeds. However, although this is usually the case, it does not guarantee a 100 percent hypoallergenic result due to the complexities of dog genetics.
Aussiedoodles typically have identical dietary needs to their Australian Shepherd and Poodle parent breeds and, as such, they typically don't require special dietary requirements. Aussiedoodles should be fed a high-quality, nutritionally balanced diet with carefully monitored portion sizes, as overeating is a common problem with this breed. It's also important to provide a sufficient amount of exercise to ensure your Aussiedoodle remains healthy and healthy weight. Supplements, such as glucosamine, can also be beneficial for supporting joint health.
Before getting an Aussiedoodle, there are some essential items you should have that will help ensure a successful transition. These include a crate or kennel, food and water dishes, bedding/blanket, food/treats, chew toys, a collar, identification tags, cleaning supplies such as natural cleaners, and a brush and comb. Additionally, enrolling your Aussiedoodle in puppy classes or obedience classes is a great way to start forming the owner/pet relationship and teach them basic commands.
Aussiedoodles can range in size, with some being considered small dogs. Generally, the smaller size of Aussiedoodles will weigh between 20 to 25 pounds, reaching a maximum height of 18 inches. The coat and overall size depends on the combination of breeds that creates specific Aussiedoodle "mixes". The Mini Australian Shepherd, the Mini Poodle, or a mixture of both is commonly used in breeding, and each can affect the size of the resultant Aussiedoodle.
Every Aussiedoodle is unique, so the amount of time they should be walked each day can vary. However, as a general rule, an Aussiedoodle should be walked for at least 30 minutes per day. This is especially true if your pup has high energy levels. On top of their daily walk, Aussiedoodles need plenty of regular exercise and mental stimulation, such as regular playtime, puzzle toys, and other activities. Additionally, to maximize the health benefits of walking, it's best to split up their daily walking routine into multiple sessions instead of one long one.
Aussiedoodles are known for their friendly, social personalities and generally get along well with other pets. They have enough energy to keep up with rambunctious companions, yet are calm and gentle enough to not overpower more docile pets. With positive socialization and a solid training foundation, Aussiedoodles can learn how to play and interact in a mutually respectful way with other pets.
Training an Aussiedoodle can certainly be enjoyable and rewarding, but it can also present some challenges. It depends on many factors, including your own training skills, the Aussiedoodle's individual temperament and training aptitude, and other variables. Generally, Aussiedoodles are an intelligent, quick to learn breed, which makes them easier to train than some other breeds. Still, their intelligence can also work against them if not managed correctly, especially in an untrained puppy or if the training methods are too rigid.
