Questions & Answers
An Aussiedoodle is a designer dog breed, created by crossing an Australian Shepherd with a Standard Poodle. This hybrid breed has gained in popularity in recent years due to its low-shedding, intelligence and great temperament. An Aussiedoodle can range in size from 25-50 lbs, with a wavy/curly coat that is usually either white, black, or brindle. This hybrid breed is generally intelligent, active, and loves being around people and other animals. This loveable pup often enjoys learning and is typically willing to take direction and obedience training.
Aussiedoodles can be either low-shedding or non-shedding depending on which parent breed it was bred with. Generally speaking, the Australian Shepherd parent provides the low-shedding quality while the Poodle parent provides the non-shedding quality. If the Aussiedoodle is bred with a Poodle that has a non-shedding coat, then the Aussiedoodle will also be considered non-shedding. A reputable breeder should be able to provide more information about the parent breeds used.
Aussiedoodles are typically active and energetic dogs, so they need the right diet to maintain their health and energy levels. Aussiedoodles should eat a premium, high-quality kibble that is balanced with all the essential nutrients their bodies need. Foods with questionable ingredients, such as meat by-products and artificial flavors, should generally be avoided. It's important to feed your Aussiedoodle several meals throughout the day, rather than just one meal.
Aussiedoodle have their own special requirements, depending on their coat type. They require a low to moderate exercise level; however, doodles with an F1 coat (a mix of wavy and curly) will need a higher level of exercise. Aussiedoodles suffer from standard doodle health issues like hip dysplasia and elbow dysplasia, so regular vaccinations, preventatives, and check-ups are advised. Also, they require regular brushing and occasional bathing to prevent knots and matting.
Aussiedoodles come in a variety of sizes, reflecting the variety of their parent breeds the Australian Shepherd and the Poodle. The size of an Aussiedoodle can range from a Toy Aussiedoodle, typically around 10 to 14 inches tall, to a Standard Aussiedoodle, generally between 18 to 23 inches tall. There is also Medium Aussiedoodle, sometimes referred to as a Miniature Aussiedoodle, that falls between the Toy and Standard sizes. Depending on the parents, Aussiedoodles can also have variations in weight and coat type.
Aussiedoodles need an average of 60 minutes of exercise each day. This can come in the form of a brisk walk, a romp at the off-leash dog park, an extended game of fetch, or swimming. With such an active breed, it's important to keep them stimulated and their joints working properly to avoid excessive weight gain, as well as mental and emotional stress. It's also important to consider your Aussiedoodle's energy level if they have more energy than average, they may need more exercise to help release it.
Aussiedoodles make excellent pets for first-time owners. Being a hybrid breed, they are typically intelligent, friendly, and loyal, characteristics which make them well-suited to those who are inexperienced in dog-rearing. As long as they are given adequate activity, socialization, and training in the early stages, you can expect your new Aussiedoodle to develop into a happy and well-behaved companion. Given their intelligence, the Aussiedoodle is relatively easy to train and can even adapt to living with cats or other small animals.
Aussiedoodles need between 30 to 60 minutes of exercise a day, depending on their age. Puppies will need more exercise than an adult Aussiedoodle, while seniors will have a lower requirement for activity. To ensure your Aussiedoodle remains healthy, try to adhere to their daily exercise routine. As a general policy, two daily walks, each lasting 30 minutes, is a good starting point for younger Aussiedoodles. However, if your pup is particularly active you may find that an hour of physical activity suits them better.
