Questions & Answers
Aussiedoodles are an exciting breed of hybrid dog that have become increasingly popular in recent years. They are a cross between an Australian Shepherd and a Poodle, typically a Standard or Miniature. This gives them a unique look and personality. Aussiedoodles are incredibly intelligent, loyal, and good natured. They are very active and athletic and thus require a good amount of daily exercise to stay healthy and in shape. They also tend to be people pleasers and make great companions because of their outgoing temperament.
Aussiedoodles are generally considered a low-shedding breed of dog because of their combination of poodle and Australian Shepherd parentage. Both parent breeds have coats that do not shed as heavily as many other breeds, so a hybrid of the two may result in a puppy with this trait. Aussiedoodle coats range from curly to more straight, and many of the puppies have a hypoallergenic coat, which means the shedding is usually much less than dogs with a single coat type.
Aussiedoodles are hybrid dogs bred from an Australian Shepherd and a Poodle, so their dietary needs will often be somewhere in between. Generally speaking, the combination of both breeds mean that Aussiedoodles do well on a diet that combines both dry kibble and high-quality, fresh food that includes lean proteins, fruits, vegetables, healthy oils and complex carbohydrates. Canned food can also be provided as a supplemental treat. To make sure your Aussiedoodle is receiving its proper nutrition, vet-recommended, age-appropriate dog food should be acquired.
Preparing for your new Aussiedoodle pup can be a very exciting and rewarding experience. It's important to familiarize yourself with this breed prior to bringing your pup home. Educate yourself on the breed's common traits, exercise requirements, vaccinations, general health needs, and grooming requirements. Additionally, research local veterinarians in your area and find out what their costs typically are for routine visits. Create a safe environment for your pup by puppy-proofing your home. Prepare items such as a comfortable bed, dog food and treats, bottles of water, a few toys, and a leash.
Aussiedoodles come in a variety of sizes, depending on the lineage of the individual dog. This breed is usually considered a medium-sized hybrid, typically reaching heights of 13-23 inches tall and weights of 20-65 pounds. Certain mixes of Australian Shepherds and Poodles could result in a larger Aussiedoodle, while smaller editions of this breed are achievable due to Toy or Miniature Poodles mixed with an Australian Shepherd.
Aussiedoodles typically enjoy the water and swimming. These active, intelligent dogs often thrive in water-related activities such as swimming, agility courses, or obedience sports. Even though this breed loves the water, it is important to gradually introduce them to swimming in order to prevent them from getting over-exerted or injured. Once accustomed to the water, Aussiedoodles make excellent swimmers due to their strength, agility, and intense love of water activities.
Aussiedoodles are often described as gentle and intelligent, making them an excellent fit for families with kids. Not only do Aussiedoodles have a naturally kind and loving nature, but they also have a great capacity for learning, which can be very beneficial when it comes to teaching them how to interact properly with children. Aussiedoodles are also active and enjoy being around people, so having them be around children, while supervised of course, can help build their bond with the family as well as reinforce desirable behavior for the pup.
Training an Aussiedoodle is best done with consistency, patience, positive reinforcement, and lots of treats. Start socializing your pup early so that by the time she is 6 months old, she is well-versed in the sweet things that come with meeting new people and animals. Begin teaching her basic commands, like 'sit,' 'stay,' and 'lie down,' as soon as she gets accustomed to her new home. Rewards-based training is the most effective, so make sure to always provide a treat or a pat on the head when she completes a task correctly.
