Questions & Answers
Aussiedoodles are considered a hybrid dog breed, also known as a designer breed. This breed is a cross between an Australian Shepherd and a Poodle, and as a result they carry the characteristics of both parents. They are best known for their intelligence, loyalty, and an energetic personality. Aussiedoodles typically weigh between 15 to 45 pounds and measure up to 23 inches at the shoulder. They come in an array of colors including black, white, and merle.
The Aussiedoodle coat is a unique mix of Australian Shepherd and Poodle coat traits. Its texture and density range depending on the amount of poodle genetics. Aussiedoodles typically shed minimally, typically just once or twice a year, depending on the type of coat. Generally, the coat is slightly wavy and silky to the touch. The Aussiedoodle coat can range from short to medium in length, and usually requires moderate grooming. Aussiedoodles with a poodle dominant, curly coat are known to require more frequent and intense grooming.
Aussiedoodles should not be fed excessive amounts of human food, such as table scraps. Items such as onions, avocados, and spinach should be avoided as these can be toxic to the animal. Foods such as chocolate, alcohol, and macadamia nuts should be strictly avoided. Raw fish, raw eggs, and raw meats, as well as yeast dough, are also not safe for Aussiedoodles. For treats, it is best to stick to the dog specific treats on the market to ensure that they are safe for consumption.
Before bringing your Aussiedoodle home, you should take some preliminary steps to make their new environment comfortable and secure. For starters, ensure that your home is safe and pet-proofed. Remove any potential hazards and block off any stairs or other areas your pup could get injured. Establish clear boundaries and schedules for your pup and create a dedicated space for them, such as a crate or a cozy spot in your home. Stock up on appropriate supplies, like food, water dishes, toys, and grooming tools.
Aussiedoodles, while not considered small dogs, are typically on the smaller side. The size of an Aussiedoodle largely depends on the size of its parents. If the Aussiedoodle's parents are smaller dogs, the Aussiedoodle is likely to be small in size. On the other hand, if the Aussiedoodle's parents are bigger dogs, the Aussiedoodle is likely to be of a larger size.
Aussiedoodles are highly energetic dogs, so they need plenty of physical and mental stimulation. Exercise is vital for maintaining your Aussiedoodle's health because it helps with their metabolism, muscle tone, and organ functionality. Regular daily exercise should include 2-3 walks of at least 20 minutes each, as well as playing activities such as fetch, agility and swimming. This helps to keep your pet active and happy and can prevent behavioural issues from developing. Additionally, you should dedicate time to games with your Aussiedoodle that involve teaching them basic commands, tricks and other mental exercises.
Aussiedoodles typically have very friendly personalities and are known to get along quite well with children. They are fairly intelligent, so they can often be trained to respect certain boundaries and display appropriate behavior when interacting with children. Aussiedoodles are also very loyal and affectionate so kids tend to feel drawn to them. With patience and consistent training, Aussiedoodles can become wonderful companions for the entire family, and children in particular.
Training your Aussiedoodle should be approached with positive reinforcement to encourage good behavior. Start by teaching basic commands such as 'sit', 'stay', and 'come'. Be consistent with what you are trying to communicate and use phrases that are simple, clear, and concise. Consider incorporating treats or other rewards as a way to praise and motivate your dog. Also, give your Aussiedoodle plenty of opportunity to practice the skills they are learning at each training session. Above all, keep the sessions fun and short to keep your pup engaged and looking forward to the next one.
