Questions & Answers
Aussiedoodles are a hybrid breed of dog that are a cross between an Australian Shepherd and a Standard Poodle. They are highly intelligent, very calm, and make great family pets. They can also be very active and love to play outdoors. Aussiedoodles have a low shedding coat but are considered to require frequent grooming to maintain its texture and quality. They usually breed true as designer dogs, meaning two Aussiedoodles will most likely have puppies with a similar temperament and appearance. In general, Aussiedoodles can live an average of 10-15 years.
Aussiedoodles can be non-shedding depending on their dominant coat. Generally, dogs with coats that are derived more from the Poodle side of their parent breeds have less shedding. This is because Poodles have fine, curly fur that tends to cling to the body and rarely sheds. If the Aussiedoodle has a coat derived more from the Australian Shepherd side, they could have a double coat that sheds more. To ensure your Aussiedoodle is non-shedding, consider getting one with a predominately Poodle coat.
Aussiedoodles, like other breeds, may have special dietary needs depending on the individual dog. Overall, a Aussiedoodle should be given a healthy, well-balanced diet that meets their nutritional needs while adhering to their age, lifestyle, and activity level. Some Aussiedoodles may require more or less food depending on their metabolism, weight, and activity level. Also, Aussiedoodles may benefit from supplements such as omega-3 fatty acids and glucosamine for joint health.
Preparing for a new Aussiedoodle can seem overwhelming but with a few simple steps, you can make your pup and your household more comfortable. Begin by creating an environment that is safe and secure for your pup by puppy-proofing your home – secure poisons, cords, and power outlets, consider baby gates, and maybe even get a crate. Also, make sure you have the necessary supplies on hand, such as food, treats, a leash, a water bowl, toys, and a bed. Socialize your pup by introducing them to family, friends, or a reputable trainer.
The size of your Aussiedoodle puppy is dependent on the size of its parents. Generally, Aussiedoodles range in size from 25 to 60 pounds. Male Aussiedoodle puppies tend to be slightly larger and heavier than females. On average, Aussiedoodles stand between 16 to 24 inches in height. If you're unsure of your Aussiedoodle puppy's exact size, the general rule of thumb is that a good indication of their adult size can be predicted by their size at 12 months of age.
You should try to walk your Aussiedoodle for a minimum of 15 minutes per day. This breed is high-energy, so daily exercise is important to keep them happy and healthy. 15 minutes is the minimum to prevent them from becoming too restless, however, most Aussiedoodles will benefit from up to an hour of walking every day. Longer walks should be supplemented with activities such as playtime and obedience practice to enhance the bond with your pup while also promoting agility, strength, and problem-solving abilities.
Aussiedoodles are known to be social and friendly, so they typically do get along well with other pets. They are known to learn to get along with other species, including cats, birds, and small animals, if they are exposed and socialized with them when they are young. Generally, Aussiedoodles are gentle and welcoming with other pets and make great companions. Their playful nature and friendly attitude often make them a favorite among their canine or feline siblings.
Training an Aussiedoodle is not necessarily easy, but it can definitely be a rewarding experience. You need to be prepared to put in the time and effort to set a consistent schedule and structure for the dog. Make sure you have lots of patience and a sense of humor, as this breed can be quite stubborn. Start off by providing basic commands and enforcing them frequently. As you progress, you can move on to more advanced commands like sit, stay, down, and come. Working with a professional trainer can help you get the results you desire.
