An Aussiedoodle is a hybrid dog breed that results from the mating of an Australian Shepherd and a Poodle. Also known as an Aussiepoo, the Aussiedoodle is an intelligent breed that is eager to learn and excels in agility, making them an excellent dog for activities such as herding and working as a service animal. They are personable and affectionate, and make great family pets. Although they can be relatively energetic, their size and intelligence make them easy to train and manage, making them the perfect pet for busy, active households.
Aussiedoodles, first-generation crosses between an Australian Shepherd and a Poodle, are often touted as low to non-shedding dogs. It is important to note, however, that no dog is truly 100% non-shedding. Coat type and genetics do play a role in the amount of shedding, and the Aussiedoodle's combination of both breeds can result in a fur that produces minimal to no loose hair. The Aussiedoodle typically sheds around the same amount as a Poodle, which is to say little compared to a full-blooded Australian Shepherd.
Aussiedoodles typically consume a nutrient-dense, high-quality diet appropriate for their age and activity level. It should include a combination of whole grains, protein sources (meat/poultry/fish), vegetables and fruits, healthy fats, and other supplements for a balanced diet. In addition, all dog formulations should be supplemented with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and other essential nutrients made specifically for dogs. It is best to research and purchase a specialized dog food brand that has been approved by the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO).
Becoming the best puppy parent for your Aussiedoodle starts with researching the breed and understanding the temperament, needs, and health of the breed. Aussiedoodles are a designer breed, usually a combination of an Australian Shepherd and a Poodle. As a result, they can come in a variety of sizes. Introducing your Aussiedoodle to other pets slowly and properly allows for smooth, easy transitions. When introducing a new pet, it's best to provide ample supervision to ensure that your Aussiedoodle, and the other pet, stay safe and that there is proper socialization. Start with short sessions and continue to increase the contact slowly to help build trust between the animals.
Aussiedoodles can be a delight to train, but there are a few steps to ensure the process is successful. First, create a safe and inviting environment in which to train your Aussiedoodle, such as a quiet room or enclosed yard, free of distractions. When trying to teach commands, it's important that the Aussiedoodle understands that you're in charge and not him/her. Establish your expectations and then be consistent with them. Make sure that you reward your Aussiedoodle's progress no matter how small.
