Questions & Answers
Aussiedoodles are a cross breed of dogs resulting from the crossing of an Australian Shepherd and a Poodle. As such, they are not recognized by the American Kennel Club as a distinct class of canine. However, the Aussiedoodle is gaining rapidly in popularity due to their friendliness, intelligence and good nature. Aussiedoodles range from small to medium in size and come in many coat colors and types, from straight to curly.
Aussiedoodles can be hypoallergenic depending on their coat type. Generally, they have a low-shedding coat that is a combination of a Poodle's typically hypoallergenic coat, and an Australian Shepherd's coat. That being said, if the Aussiedoodle inherits more of the Australian Shepherd's coat, it may need more frequent brushing and shedding, which may cause more allergens. As always, always consult your medical professionals if you have allergies or asthma to be sure that a certain breed is right for you.
Aussiedoodles are a highly active breed and require a dog food that has the right balance of fats, carbohydrates, minerals, vitamins, and proteins to give them the nourishment they need. When deciding on the best food for an Aussiedoodle, it's important to look at the ingredients list and make sure you’re giving your pup natural, whole ingredients that mimic the food they’d hunt or eat in the wild. Avoid any dog food with preservatives or other questionable ingredients.
To best prepare your home for your new Aussiedoodle, the first step is to have the necessary items on hand. Ensure that you have a collar and leash, food and water bowls, dog-friendly treats, bedding, toys, and a crate. Next, make sure you have a safe, secure area for your Aussiedoodle to explore. Block off any areas with potential hazards, such as chemicals and objects your pup may swallow, and be sure to child-proof cabinets or drawers that may contain harmful items.
Aussiedoodles vary in size depending upon the blend of breeds that make up the litter generally they range between 30-50 pounds, which means they can be considered "big dogs" by some standards. Generally, the more poodle they have in their genealogy, the more likely it is that they will be on the smaller side. If they have more Australian Shepherd in their lineage, they are likely to be larger.
The amount of walking that's required for an Aussiedoodle specifically can vary, but a good rule of thumb is to aim for at least half an hour to an hour of walking per day. However, if your Aussiedoodle is an especially active breed, then you may wish to increase the amount of time they spend walking in order to keep them physically and mentally stimulated. Some activities such as fetch or agility training can also be incorporated into their daily exercise regimen in place of, or in addition to, regular walking.
Aussiedoodles can be great canine companions for families with kids! They are incredibly intelligent, extremely loyal, and generally boast an outgoing, playful personality. These traits often lead to a harmonious relationship with children, however it is important to note that they need proper and consistent training and socializing in order to reach their full potential. Additionally, their high energy and herding instinct may be overwhelming for a toddler, so it's important to take age into consideration when introducing a new pup into a home with kids.
Training an Aussiedoodle requires time, patience, and plenty of positive reinforcement. You should start training with simple commands such as "sit", "stay" and "come" and use reward-based approaches whenever possible. To help your Aussiedoodle adjust to their surroundings faster, expose them to different people, animals, and environments along with positive reinforcement from an early age. Additionally, as you build your pup's confidence, make sure to provide plenty of mental stimulation by engaging your Aussiedoodle in puzzle toys and agility courses.
