Questions & Answers
Aussiedoodle is an Australian Labradoodle hybrid, a designer dog breed that is created by crossing a purebred Australian Shepherd with a Standard, Miniature, or Toy Poodle. This medium-sized, energetic designer breed has the intelligence and affectionate nature of the Australian Shepherd and the agility and obedience of the Poodle. The coat may be somewhat wavy to extremely curly and can range in every color from black, white, brown, silver, gray, and even parti-colored. The Aussiedoodle is intelligent, loyal, and affectionate.
Aussiedoodles are known to be low to non-shedding dogs due to their hybrid mix of Australian Shepherd and Poodle, though none can be guaranteed 100% non-shedding. The tight curls of the Poodle coat paired with the longer, straight coat of the Australian Shepherd give these pups an advantage in the shedding department. They rarely shed much, if at all, but this can also depend on the individual pup and how much they take after one or the other breed in terms of coat type.
When feeding your Aussiedoodle, it is important to be aware of what you should avoid. While Aussiedoodles are both strong and lively, certain foods can be dangerous for them. Some of the foods to avoid feeding your Aussiedoodle include grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, and sugary foods like candy. Additionally, it is not recommended to feed your Aussiedoodle avocado, macadamia nuts, chocolate, and certain dairy products, as these items can induce a variety of medical issues including vomiting, weakness, and diarrhea.
Before getting an Aussiedoodle, it's essential to have certain supplies. These include food and water bowls, a comfortable bed or crate, a collar and/or harness with tags, and lots of toys. Other items to consider are grooming supplies like nail clippers and a brush; an identification tag for your pup; a leash and a few treats; and potty training materials. You may also want to purchase items such as a puppy-sized kennel or carrier, a pet stroller, and any other items that your pup may need.
Aussiedoodles come in a variety of sizes, decided by their parents' breed combinations. Generally, they can range from small to medium; however, they can also be on the bigger side depending on the size of the parents. For example, if two large-breed dogs are used for the mix, then a larger Aussiedoodle is likely. Most Aussiedoodle owners choose smaller dogs, since they make fantastic companion pets, as their size can range from 14-23 inches and weigh anywhere from 15-70 pounds.
Absolutely! Taking your Aussiedoodle running can be a great way to provide mental and physical stimulation and help them stay in shape. However, depending on their age, size, and overall health, running can also stress their joints and muscles. As such, it's important to consult with your veterinarian before planning a running regimen for your pup. You may want to start off with shorter distances and gradually increase the length and intensity of the runs to help build up your Aussiedoodle's endurance.
Aussiedoodles make for excellent family dogs, provided they are given the necessary socialization, care, and attention. With proper care and training, these intelligent, loyal pups will become loving family members that are eager to please. They are generally very gentle, friendly and get along great with children and other pets, making them a perfect addition to any household. Their intelligence and people-loving nature inspire them to learn quickly and bond closely with their family.
The amount of time you need to devote to training your Aussiedoodle depends on several factors, such as your pup's age, comprehension level, and the results you are hoping to achieve. Generally speaking, 10-15 minutes 2-3 times per day is a safe starting point for training. This allows your Aussiedoodle to settle in and focus before giving them challenging tasks. As your pup becomes comfortable and confident with commands, you can increase the amount of time devoted to training to a maximum of an hour per day.
