Questions & Answers
Aussiedoodles are a cross between an Australian Shepherd and a Poodle that make great companion animals due to their intellegence, affection and friendly nature. They are loyal to their families, and are known for getting along with children and other animals. They are inquisitive and active, and require regular exercise and mental stimulation. Aussiedoodles need regular grooming to keep their coats free of tangles and maintain their health. They are generally healthy dogs, but may be prone to certain conditions, such as hip dysplasia.
Aussiedoodles may cause allergic reactions in people, as they are a breed of hypoallergenic dogs. However, it depends on which type of allergies you have. If you have pet allergies, then you may experience a reaction upon contact with the breed's dander or saliva. It is advisable to spend some time with the breed to see if you have any reaction.
Aussiedoodles are usually known for being active and having an excellent appetite, but it's important to be mindful of what you're feeding them. In particular, avoid feeding Aussiedoodles table scraps, alcohol, chocolate, coffee, macadamia nuts, grapes, raisins, and avocados. Some other foods and ingredients that may pose a health risk if ingested include sugar, fat, onions, garlic, and artificial sweeteners. Overfeeding your Aussiedoodle can also lead to weight gain and other health complications.
The best way to get ready for your new Aussiedoodle is to do some research. Learning about their breed, associated behaviors, health concerns, expected specific needs and diet requirements is a great place to start. It's also helpful to read up on age-appropriate and breed-specific training techniques, so you can properly set boundaries and reinforce desired behaviors. Visit your veterinarian to get your pup up-to-date on their vaccines, and stock up on necessities such as a durable collar and leash, food and water bowls, toys, and a comfortable bed.
Aussiedoodles can be characterized as a medium-size dog. Depending on the breed of the parent dogs, Aussiedoodles generally reach heights of 18-24 inches and weights of 25-50 pounds when fully grown. While they may not be considered 'big' by most standards, Aussiedoodles have longer legs and bodies than most other breeds, so they appear larger when standing. Additionally, Aussiedoodles are very intelligent and active dogs, often with a thick fur coat, so they can often be deceptive in size as well.
Generally speaking, Aussiedoodles do tend to love swimming! As a cross between the Australian Shepherd and Poodle, this breed is particularly adept at activities that require agility and coordination, such as swimming. This breed also has a double coat, which means they are not easily affected by cold water--often an advantage as a swimmer! Similarly, their level of intelligence makes learning commands or tricks related to swimming easy; they can even learn to retrieve items.
Aussiedoodles are a great choice for first-time pet owners! They are known for being incredibly intelligent, loyal, and trainable, which makes them fairly easy for first-time pet owners to take care of. Aussiedoodles have a moderate-to-high energy level and are incredibly playful, so it is important to ensure that they get enough exercise and mental stimulation on a regular basis. They are also likely to form strong attachments to their owners, so providing a comfortable, loving home is essential for a happy Aussiedoodle.
Training an Aussiedoodle should be approached with patience and consistency. Start with simple commands such as sit and stay and direct your dog's attention with treats and positive reinforcement. Beyond this, teach them to understand their own boundaries by establishing a routine of direct instruction. Doing things such as regular walks, meal times and providing toys can help develop an organized system of routine that the Aussiedoodle can become accustomed to. Be sure to be clear and consistent with your commands and continue to reward with positive reinforcement.
