Questions & Answers
An Aussiedoodle is a hybrid breed of dog resulting from a cross between a purebred Australian Shepherd and a purebred Poodle. This designer breed combines the intelligence of a Poodle with the enthusiasm and loyalty of the Australian Shepherd to make one lovable and clever pup. Aussiedoodles typically stand between 15 to 25 inches tall and can weigh anywhere from 20 to 55 pounds upon reaching adulthood. They have an athletic, muscular build and a soft, fluffy coat of varying colors. Thanks to the Poodle in its lineage, this breed is highly intelligent and easy to train.
Aussiedoodles have not yet been recognized by the American Kennel Club and there is little agreement on whether they are hypoallergenic or not. While many doodle breeders report that the Aussiedoodle is a hypoallergenic breed, there can be some controversy. Aussiedoodles can be a crossbreed between an Australian Shepherd and a Poodle and the genetics of each dog can play a role in whether they are hypoallergenic or not.
Aussiedoodles do have some slightly different dietary needs than other breeds of dogs. They have a higher than usual energy level and therefore need more protein, as well as healthy fats and carbohydrates. Certain additives such as beef by-products and artificial colors can upset their stomachs, so it's important to look for food with all-natural ingredients. Aussiedoodles also need to receive added vitamins and minerals in their diet since their coats require extra nourishment.
Preparing your home for a new Aussiedoodle is a fun and exciting process! You will want to make sure you have the proper equipment and supplies for your pup. First, buy a sturdy crate to give your pup a safe and comfortable place to rest. You should also purchase food that is high-quality and appropriate for the breed. Before your pup arrives, make sure you puppy-proof your home by hiding away electrical cords, re-arranging sharp corners, and moving anything fragile or hazardous out of reach.
Aussiedoodles can vary in size, depending on their breeding and whether they are standard or miniature variations. Generally speaking, they are classified as medium-sized dogs, though in comparison to many breeds, they can be considered small. They usually reach a height of 18-20 inches and can weigh anywhere from 25 to 45 pounds. Despite their size, they often have the energy levels associated with larger dogs, which is why it's important to provide them with plenty of exercise and outdoor time.
Aussiedoodles are incredibly active dogs! Characterized by high intelligence and energy, these dogs are always interested in playing and running around. If they don't get the necessary exercise, they will become restless and unhappy, so it's important to make sure they receive the activity they need: at least 60 minutes of exercise per day. They are eager to please their owners and enjoy learning, so teaching them tricks and participating in activities that involve pedaling, driving and swimming are highly recommended in order to keep them mentally and physically stimulated.
Aussiedoodles have the potential to get along well with other pets. Socialization is key when introducing a new pet into a home with existing pets. Aussiedoodles are intelligent and highly sociable dogs, so when exposed to other animals with positive reinforcement training and appropriate guidance, they can learn to be great housemates. Start the introduction process slowly – a new pet should be kept separated or have limited interaction with current residents until they become comfortable in their new environment and show positive body language.
Training an Aussiedoodle requires patience and consistency. It's best to start with basic commands such as 'sit', 'stay', and 'come' and reward your pup with positive reinforcement, like treats and praise. Gradually progress by adding duration and distance to these commands and practicing in different environments, such as other people's homes and places with distractions. Choose a few basics and repeat the same commands often. Consider taking your Aussiedoodle to obedience classes for socialization and to teach them the basics of listening.
