Questions & Answers
An Aussiedoodle is a hybrid dog breed that is a mix of the Australian Shepherd and the ever-popular Poodle. It's a relatively new breed with an average life span of around 13 to 17 years, but can live longer with proper care. They are known for being incredibly intelligent, affectionate, and friendly to all types of people. They are also said to be hypoallergenic because of their low-shedding coat. Aussiedoodles are outgoing, playful, and easy to train due to their high intelligence.
Aussiedoodles are commonly described as non-shedding, but this is not always the case. While their coat may be low-shedding and hypoallergenic, they can still shed a small amount. Depending on the type of Aussiedoodle and its parent breeds, there can be more or less shedding. Genetically, F1 Aussiedoodles (which are crossings between standard Poodles and Australian Shepherds) tend to shed a little more than an F1B, which is a cross between a Poodle and an Aussiedoodle.
Aussiedoodles should not be fed any type of chocolate, as it can be toxic for dogs. Additionally, foods like onions, garlic, grapes, and raisins should be avoided, as they can also be very dangerous for dogs. Xylitol, which is found in many sugar-free foods, is also toxic to dogs, so it should be avoided when feeding an Aussiedoodle. In general, table scraps should be avoided for any type of breed, as they are not specifically designed for their nutritional needs.
Preparing your home for your new Aussiedoodle should involve setting boundaries and providing a consistent routine. Start by deciding which rooms and pieces of furniture will be off-limits to your pup. Areas such as bedrooms and couches are often desirable places to snuggle but can be prohibited unless proper behavior and training have been achieved. You should also get a puppy-proofing kit for your home. Start training basics like potty training and obeying basic commands to create an atmosphere of respect. It is also important to create a safe environment for your pup to explore.
Aussiedoodles come in a variety of sizes. They can range from small Toy size to Standard size. Generally, Toy Aussiedoodles are around 10-14 inches in height and 15-25 pounds in size. Standard Aussiedoodles are taller in height, usually up to 23 inches, and can weigh as much as 70 pounds. Mini Aussiedoodles are a smaller version of the Standard Aussiedoodle ranging in size from 12-18 inches in height and 20-35 pounds in weight.
Aussiedoodles have a strong affinity for swimming, so the answer is yes! Thanks to their herding heritage, this breed of dog is an innate swimmer. Additionally, their double coat of medium-length hair makes them well-equipped for colder water. They have plenty of energy and they'll happily and eagerly jump in for a swim. Oftentimes, Aussiedoodles will find a nearby body of water and jump right in, as naturally as any other of their activities. Swimming is a great way for them to exercise and explore their natural instinct for swimming.
Aussiedoodles can get along with other pets if they are raised together or introduced to one another in a controlled, supervised manner. Usually, they are social creatures that will enjoy interacting with other family members, both human and furry. Early and frequent socialization will help establish healthy boundaries and help foster positive relationships between the Aussiedoodle and other pets.
Absolutely Aussiedoodles are incredibly intelligent creatures. Their Australian Shepherd and Poodle mix gives them the best of both breeds, making them both loyal and obedient. This, combined with their natural energy and enthusiasm, results in an aptitude for learning that many owners find difficult to match. It’s not unusual to find them excelling at commands, agility, tricks, and problem solving, with the ability to outperform many of their canine competitors in the smarts department.
