Questions & Answers
An Aussiedoodle is a hybrid breed of dog recognized by the American Canine Hybrid Club, the Designer Dogs Kennel Club, and the International Designer Canine Registry. It is a cross between an Australian Shepherd and a Poodle. This breed combines the intelligence and loyalty of an Australian Shepherd with the low-shedding coat of a Poodle. Since both of these parent breeds have a strong work-drive, the Aussiedoodle often inherits this trait and is great for activities such as agility, herding, and obedience.
As a hybrid of the Australian shepherd and the poodle, the Aussiedoodle has what most people refer to as a hypoallergenic coat. Generally, this coat is composed of tightly curled, silky fur that normally won't shed. This characteristic makes the Aussiedoodle an excellent choice for people who suffer from allergies. Plus, because of the low to non-shedding nature of their fur, the Aussiedoodle is typically ideal for those who don't want to constantly vacuum their carpets.
Aussiedoodles should not be fed anything that contains onions or garlic, as these ingredients can be toxic to them. In addition to that, foods that have a lot of fat, such as red meat, can cause the dog to gain unhealthy weight and contribute to digestive issues. Sweets, like chocolate, should also be avoided, as they have the potential to cause gastrointestinal distress and can be very dangerous for your dog.
Before getting an Aussiedoodle, it's important to stock up on some essentials such as a crate and bed, good quality food, a brush and comb, insulation for the crate, toys, treats, and leashes. Additionally, depending on the climate, you may need to purchase items like booties, a coat, and sunscreen for the pup. You should also make sure to have a few weeks of supplies on hand such as wipes, shampoo and conditioner, and stain removers for accidents.
Aussiedoodles can vary in size, as they are a cross between an Australian Shepherd and a Poodle. Generally, they grow to be between 20 and 45 pounds, which is considered medium-sized. According to the official Aussiedoodle breed standard, the accepted size categories range from mini, which is typically under 30 pounds, to standard size, which is generally between 40-50 pounds. However, smaller sizes are still considered a bit large for apartment living due to their high energy level, and larger sizes may need more exercise and grooming than other breeds.
While there are varying opinion regarding Aussiedoodles and swimming, generally it's true that these dogs enjoy taking a dip in the pool every once in a while. This breed is typically known for its outgoing and curious personality, and it's not uncommon for these pups to run and jump into any body of water they see. Additionally, Aussiedoodles typically have a higher than average tolerance of cold water, meaning they can be safely swimmers in areas that may seem too cold for other breeds.
Aussiedoodles are generally friendly and affectionate when it comes to interacting with other pets. As long as sufficient socialization and conditioning are provided when they are young, Aussiedoodles are likely to be comfortable and welcoming to companion animals of all kinds. With proper training and supervision, most Aussiedoodles are able to peacefully co-exist with other pets in the same household.
Training an Aussiedoodle can be relatively easy depending on the individual pup! These dogs are clever and quick learners, often figuring out commands and tricks within a few tries. Their intelligence, energy, and enthusiasm makes them ideal candidates for training and they typically take to it quickly. Aussiedoodles are also very eager to please and often respond better to positive reinforcement and patience. With these traits and a bit of consistency and regularity, most owners should find that their pup catches on very easily to training.
