Questions & Answers
Aussiedoodles, also known as Aussiepoos, are a relatively new hybrid breed that are becoming increasingly popular among dog ownership. A cross between an Australian Shepherd and a Poodle, Aussiedoodles have a variety of traits associated with both breeds they are descended from, which makes them smart, loyal, and energetic with a love for play and activity. They can range in size from mini (10-15 pounds) to the standard (30-45 pounds) and their coat can vary from fluffy and wavy to the more traditional tight curls associated with Poodles.
Aussiedoodles may be considered relatively non-shedding in comparison to some other breeds, but it is important to note that all dogs will shed some hair regardless of their breed. Aussiedoodles typically have a low to non-shedding coat type because the coat is composed of a mix of genetics from a Poodle and an Australian Shepherd. The mix of the two breeds usually yields a coat that is thick and wavy with varying curl patterns. With proper grooming, the Aussiedoodle's coat will not shed nearly as much as many other breeds.
Aussiedoodles should not be fed human food, such as nuts, onions, garlic, chocolates, raisins, or grapes, all of which can be toxic to dogs. Additionally, bones from chickens, fish, pigs, beef, or lamb should never be given to Aussiedoodles; these could pose a choking hazard or damage their digestive systems. Aussiedoodles should also not be fed sugary foods, like candy, cookies, ice cream, or cakes. These foods can cause dental problems, obesity, and pancreatitis.
It is important to prepare your home in advance of your new Aussiedoodle's arrival. Start by making sure your home is "pet-proof," including blocking off any areas you do not want your puppy to access. Also, be sure to purchase all the necessary supplies and items your puppy might need such as food and water bowls, a collar and leash, a crate for house training, chew toys, and pet shampoo. Make sure you also establish a designated play area and, if possible, create a dog-proof space where your pet can stay while you are away.
Aussiedoodles vary in size depending on the size of the breeding dogs. Generally, they grow to be medium-sized dogs, but they have the potential to be larger if the parent breeds were larger. Aussiedoodles typically range between 30-45 lbs, but it's possible for them to reach up to 60 lbs and beyond. Their height will generally range from 15-24 inches. Although Aussiedoodles are not considered to be large dogs, their size and strength make them fearless guardians of their families and their homes.
Absolutely! Aussiedoodles are known for their active nature and are always eager for a good run. It's important to make sure your Aussiedoodle is the right age before taking them running, generally your Aussiedoodle should be exercised no more than 20-30 minutes per day until they reach 12-14 months old. After 12-14 months old, you can lengthen their running time as they become more mature. You should also make sure that your Aussiedoodle is healthy enough for running and speak to your veterinarian about any concerns you may have.
Aussiedoodles are an excellent family pet, especially for households with children. They are known for their intelligent, playful, and loving nature. Aussiedoodles are easy to train and they love spending time with people, especially kids. They are also great guard dogs, due to their loyal and protective traits, as well as being highly energetic, with some individuals proven to possess herding instinct. Additionally, these dogs are known to enjoy activities such as fetch, agility, swimming and hiking.
Training an Aussiedoodle isn't necessarily easy but it is doable. With patience, dedication and consistency, any informed owner can help their Aussiedoodle learn basic obedience and develop good manners. Consistent positive reinforcement is key to successful training and to inspire your Aussiedoodle to work in sync with you. Socialization and early obedience training should be done when the Aussiedoodle is young as soon as they find their home for best results.
