Questions & Answers
Bernedoodles are a mix between the Bernese Mountain Dog and the Standard or Miniature Poodle. Bernese Mountain Dogs are classified in the working group of dogs, while Poodles are part of the non-sporting group. However, the Bernedoodle crosses the two and is typically classified in a hybrid group or, more rarely, the designer group. Bernedoodles come in a variety of sizes and colors from the Toy size of 7-15 lbs to the Standard size which can reach up to 79 lbs.
Bernedoodles--an adorable crossbreed of Bernese Mountain Dogs and Poodles--are widely considered to be non-shedding or low-shedding dogs. While they may have short-to-medium length Bernese Mountain Dog fur, it's usually wavy or curly, which causes dander and other loose hair to cling to the coat instead of spreading around your home. You'll still want to provide regular maintenance to ensure that your Bernedoodle's coat remains healthy and remains low-shedding.
Feeding your Bernedoodle a balanced, nutritious diet is key to maintaining their physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing. It’s best to feed them high-quality dry kibble, supplemented with cooked, plain proteins like lean beef, chicken, fish, or lamb. Be aware that certain proteins, like pork contain too much fat, and should be avoided. In addition to their main meals, it’s a good idea to give them occasional treats and supplements. Nutrient-rich fruits and vegetables such as carrots, apples, and blueberries are suggested.
Preparing your home for your new Bernedoodle doesn't have to be a daunting task. First, create a safe and comfortable environment by puppy proofing your home. Remove any hazards that could be potentially hazardous to your Bernedoodle. Ensure that all hazardous chemicals are in a secure place and out of your pet's reach. Secondly, gather all the necessary supplies that your Bernedoodle will need such as food and water dishes, toys, a comfortable bed, a leash, and appropriate grooming supplies.
There is no way to predict the exact size of your Bernedoodle puppy; however, the general size range for a Bernedoodle is between 10 and 15 inches at the shoulder when fully grown. Bernedoodles can vary in size depending on genetics, nutrition, exercise, and age. Factors such as a puppy’s parents’ size can provide some indication of the size the puppy may become once fully grown; however, due to the varying genetics between crosses, size is not guaranteed.
Generally speaking, at least 30 minutes of walking a day is recommended for Bernedoodles. Of course, the ideal amount of walking for your Bernedoodle would depend on factors like its breed, age, and energy levels. When determining the amount of walking your Bernedoodle should get each day, it's best to consult a veterinarian or knowledgeable dog care provider. For puppies, shorter and more frequent walks of 5-10 minutes at a time, with regular play and runs in an enclosed area, are best.
Bernedoodles are great for first-time owners because they are incredibly intelligent and trainable breeds. They are also known to have loving and loyal temperaments, making them easy to get along with in a home environment. Though they have high energy levels, Bernedoodles have a calm nature and are quite adaptable, allowing them to pick up on new activities easily. In addition, they require minimal grooming due to their low-shedding coats, and need minimal exercise, making them low-maintenance pets. All of this makes them an ideal fit for first-time owners.
Training your Bernedoodle should be an enjoyable experience! For best results, it's important to use positive reinforcement methods such as providing treats or verbal praise when you observe desired behaviors. Start by teaching your Bernedoodle the basic commands like Sit, Stay, Down, and Leave It. For more difficult commands, break them up into manageable steps so that your Bernedoodle can easily learn new tasks. Reward each successful step with a treat or some verbal praise and be patient when encountering setbacks. With consistent and positive training, your Bernedoodle will learn and respond to commands quickly.
