Questions & Answers
One of the most interesting things about Bernedoodles is that they are a hybrid breed of two of the most beloved companion animals the Bernese Mountain Dog and the Poodle. This mix of two popular breeds make them excellent family companions, as they are intelligent, affectionate, and loyal. Bernedoodles are also quite active, so they can make great companions for people who enjoy the outdoors. They have a combination of intelligence, trainability, and level of activity that makes them versatile and adaptable in many settings.
Bernedoodles are a crossbreed between a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle, and they are often considered to be a good breed for families that seek a non-shedding dog. They inherit the Poodle's low-shedding genes, which result in the Bernedoodle having a coat that is soft, dense, and curly. When it comes to shedding, these dogs are considered to be hypoallergenic, meaning that people with allergies are not likely to experience a reaction when around a Bernedoodle.
Bernedoodles require an appropriate diet to stay healthy, so understanding what not to feed them is important. You should never feed a Bernedoodle chocolate, grapes, or anything containing the artificial sweetener xylitol as these are known to be toxic to dogs. Onions, garlic, and raisins are toxic in large amounts and should be avoided. Corn, wheat, and soy, as well as people food items such as tomato leaves, potato skins, and green tomatoes, are also not recommended.
Preparing for a new Bernedoodle requires some important steps. Start by creating a safe, comfortable home environment. Ensure the house/apartment has sturdy fencing around the perimeter, and dog-proof the inside of the house. Familiarize yourself with the Bernedoodle's breed characteristics so you will be able to provide the best care possible. Consider stocking up on dog supplies such as food, treats, toys, and grooming products. Start working on obedience and basic commands. Research local veterinarians and pet groomers that specialize in Bernedoodles.
Bernedoodles are generally considered to be medium to large-sized dogs. As a mixed breed, their size depends largely on which of their parents they take after more, a Standard Poodle and a Bernese Mountain Dog. If bred from two large-sized dogs, Bernedoodles can range from 45-70 pounds, depending on the size of their parents. The height of a Bernedoodle can also range from 18-25 inches and they can live for 12-15 years.
Bernedoodles need an appropriate amount of exercise, depending on a few factors such as age and activity level. Generally, puppies need the most exercise compared to adults and seniors, and active, sport-type Bernedoodles will require more exercise than a more laid back, couch potato one. On a regular basis, these dogs should get a combination of mental enrichment, agility training, games (like fetch or hide and seek), and daily walks. Swimming is also a great exercise option for Bernedoodles, as they are considered semi-water retrievers and love the water.
Bernedoodles make excellent family dogs! They are loyal, loving, and intelligent companions that love spending time with their owners. Bernedoodles are fairly easy to train and their patience and willingness to please make them perfect to live with families. They also love to play outdoors and socialize with other humans. Their athletic build makes them suitable for activities like running and playing fetch. Bernedoodles have an even temperament, making them great with children who prefer gentle, calm, and affectionate pets.
Training a Bernedoodle can be fairly simple, depending on the individual pup. Generally, Bernedoodles respond well to positive reinforcement and are eager to please. To easily train a Bernedoodle, it's important to start with basic commands such as sit, stay, come, and heel. Consistency and repetitiveness are key reinforcing the commands and repeating regularly will help the dog learn quickly. Additionally, spending regular time with your Bernedoodle and providing plenty of exercise will help create a strong bond and encourage better listening behavior.
