Questions & Answers
Bernedoodles are a hybrid cross between a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle. They are friendly and intelligent, making them great family dogs. Bernedoodles are also loyal, easy to train and have non-shedding coats. Bernedoodles come in many colors, sizes, and coats, ranging from large wooly coats to smaller wavy coats. This makes them a great fit for many lifestyles, everything from an active family with children to a single owner living in small space looking for a gentle companion.
Managing allergies with Bernedoodles begins with understanding that the Bernedoodle's coat is a cross between a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle. This means that the Bernedoodle coat can range from being thick and wiry like a Bernese Mountain Dog's to soft and curly like a Poodle’s and anywhere in between. Since the Bernedoodle coat can vary depending on which parent breed the pup takes after, it is beneficial to speak to the breeder beforehand to get an idea of what type of coat the pup may have.
Bernedoodles should not be given foods that contain cocoa, raisins, grapes, and should not be given anything that contains the sweetener Xylitol as these can be extremely toxic for them. In general, it is best to consult with your veterinarian before introducing any new foods into your Bernedoodle's diet. Not all food types and ingredients are appropriate for all dogs, and you will want to make sure that you are giving your Bernedoodle foods that are healthy and safe for them.
Prior to getting a Bernedoodle, it's important to stock up on some of the essentials. This includes food and water bowls, a comfortable collar and leash, grooming supplies, a bed or crate, some chew toys, and regarding the last two, consider that Bernedoodles can be very active and need plenty of playtime. Additionally, a brush, shampoo, nail clippers, and dental chew toys should be prepped as part of a healthy grooming routine. A Bernedoodle should also brush up on training indoor manners and limits with treats, books, or food rewards for practice.
Bernedoodles come in a wide variety of sizes, ranging from micro to giant. The miniature Bernedoodles stands at 14-17 inches in height and weighs between 15-30 pounds. The small Bernedoodle stands between 18-22 inches and weighs between 30-45 pounds. The medium Bernedoodle stands between 23-26 inches and typically weighs between 45-65 pounds. The standard Bernedoodle stands between 27-35 inches and weighs between 65-90 pounds. The giant Bernedoodle stands between 36-45 inches and typically weighs over 90 pounds.
Yes, you can take your Bernedoodle running. While Bernedoodles, like all dogs, require physical activity and daily exercise, it is important to pay close attention to the age and health of your Bernedoodle before setting out. For puppies, start slowly with brief walks that gradually become longer until the pup is 18 months old. For an adult dog, depending on age and health status, running should be an appropriate activity.
Bernedoodles are known to be excellent family dogs. They are intelligent, loyal, and incredibly sweet-natured. Though they may not be overly energetic, Bernedoodles still have plenty of energy for activities both indoors and outdoors, and they make wonderful companions for walks and hikes. They are also renowned for their gentle and affectionate demeanors; their adaptability to any situation from high-energy homes to quiet seniors makes them great for families of any size and lifestyle.
It depends on the individual Bernedoodle, but in general, 30-60 minutes of daily training should be adequate. The exact amount of training time should be tailored to each Bernedoodle's needs – some require more, while others may need less. Your goal should be to keep your Bernedoodle healthy and well-mannered. Training should focus on positive reinforcement techniques such as reward-based activities, clicker training, and behavioral shaping. Teaching commands such as sit, stay, come, and heel will help establish your Bernedoodle's understanding of their responsibilities.
