Questions & Answers
Bernedoodles are a relatively new designer dog breed, resulting from a cross between a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle. This mix offers a unique combination of traits from each breed that can include a variety of different sizes, coat textures, and colors; typically, Bernedoodles have active and intelligent personalities. Depending on the generation or size they may be considered a Toy, Miniature, Standard or a Giant Bernedoodle.
Bernedoodles typically have soft, fluffy coats with a wavy or curly texture. Depending on the mix, the colors can vary from black, white, tan, grey, and reddish-brown. In some cases, they may also have patches of color or blaze faces. Generally, you can expect their coats to be thick and double-layered, providing a lot of warmth and protection from the elements.
Bernedoodles generally require different nutrition compared to other breeds due to their hybrid and active nature. It's important that they are given a balanced diet, and a dry food specifically formulated for this breed of dog is the best option. If possible, try to find a natural food that is grain-free and free of additives. Bernedoodles do not require a lot of meat or any type of meat by-product. They should have protein as well as complex carbohydrates like sweet potatoes, oatmeal, and brown rice. You may also provide fresh and cooked vegetables as an occasional treat.
Before getting a Bernedoodle, there are a few essential items you should purchase. For starters, a high-quality dog food will help your pup maintain a healthy, balanced diet. A sturdy leash and collar should also be included, as well as a bed and some chew toys to keep your Bernedoodle entertained. If you plan on teaching your pup any basic obedience commands, treats may also be used. Additionally, keeping items like grooming brushes, grooming shampoo, and nail clippers are essential in keeping your pup nice and clean.
Bernedoodles are hybrid breeds that combine Bernese mountain dogs and poodles, both of which are considered to be fairly large breeds. Depending on the parent breeds being crossed, Bernedoodles can range from small to extra-large in size, so it is possible for a Bernedoodle to be considered a big dog. The size of a Bernedoodle is determined by its parent's pedigree, but generally, Bernedoodles average between 30 to 40 pounds when fully grown.
Bernedoodles need plenty of exercise to stay healthy and happy. Specifically, Bernedoodles should be taken on a walk of 30 minutes to an hour each day. Additionally, Bernedoodles should also be given an opportunity to run in an enclosed area, like a park or a fenced-in yard, at least once a day to help them remain healthy and active. To ensure optimal physical and mental well-being, it's important to give your Bernedoodle ample opportunities for physical activity each week besides just a daily walk or run.
Bernedoodles have the best traits of both the Bernese Mountain Dog and Poodle, making them an excellent choice for first-time puppy owners. Bernedoodles tend to be intelligent, friendly, and loyal; they generally display an easygoing temperament, while still retaining their alert and playful. Bernedoodles are very intuitive and often observe their owners and do what is asked of them. As they are social and tend to form strong bond with their owner, Bernedoodles require lots of attention and playtime; however, they are not overly energetic.
The amount of time to train Bernedoodles depends on their age and their current level of understanding and familiarity with basic commands. Generally, puppies should receive 10 to 15 minutes of focused training time each day, while adult Bernedoodles will require longer sessions that could last up to 30 minutes. It is important to split up the sessions into multiple, short training periods throughout the day. For best results, you should also leave plenty of time for Bernedoodles to play and interact with other animals, as adequate exercise is key for training.
