Questions & Answers
Bernedoodles are a hybrid designer dog breed derived from a Bernese Mountain Dog and Poodle. They are incredibly intelligent, loyal, and affectionate companions, making them a great addition to any home. Bernedoodles come in a variety of sizes, including the popular Standard (50-90 lbs), Mini (15-50 lbs), and Toy (under 10 lbs) varieties. They are low-shedding dogs and great for those with allergies, as well as those with an active lifestyle. Bernedoodles require regular grooming and are very trainable.
Bernedoodles are not hypoallergenic, although many types of dogs with similar hypoallergenic qualities do exist. This is because a Bernedoodle’s coat is a blend of two different parent breeds: the Bernese Mountain Dog and the Poodle. The Bernese Mountain Dog is not hypoallergenic and can cause allergic reactions due to its thick double-layer coat. The Poodle, on the other hand, is hypoallergenic due to its curly, single layer coat that’s designed to hold less allergens.
Bernedoodles typically have a similar diet to other hybrid or mixed-breed dogs. It is important to feed them a healthy, well-balanced diet in order for them to live a long, healthy life. Depending on their physical activity and size, they can require anywhere from two to four cups of food per day, split between two meals. Generally, a brand with real protein (such as beef, lamb, or chicken) should make up the majority of their diet. As with all dogs, it is important to avoid overfeeding and maintain a healthy weight.
Before getting a Bernedoodle, there are a few must-have items that you should purchase. Essential items to invest in include a high-quality collar and leash, comfortable bed, chew toys, brush and shampoo, a crate, potty pads and training treats. All of these items will help keep your Bernedoodle safe, secure and comfortable. You should also consider buying a variety of food dishes and toys, as Bernedoodles are active and need regular mental stimulation.
The size of your Bernedoodle puppy will depend on the size of their parents since Bernedoodles are a hybrid breed. If both of the parents are standard-sized Bernese Mountain Dogs, the puppy can reach up to 25 inches at the shoulder and weigh up to 80 pounds. But if one of the parents is a miniature Poodle, the puppy may be slightly smaller. Generally, Bernedoodles range from 18 to 30 inches in height and 20 to 80 pounds in weight, but each individual puppy may vary.
Bernedoodles need daily exercise to stay healthy and happy. Regular exercise helps to keep the Bernedoodle's physical and mental health in balance, so active owners should aim to provide them with at least 30-60 minutes of vigorous exercise per day. In addition, playtime and activities like fetch or agility courses can help to keep Bernedoodles feeling their best. Swimming is a great way to get a full-body workout, while exploratory walks help to mentally stimulate them and give owners an opportunity to bond with their dog.
Bernedoodles are often great companions for families, especially when they have children. These hybrids are generally loving and loyal, with plenty of patience and gentleness. Their intelligence and eagerness to please make them quick to learn, though housebreaking can be a bit sloppy. Their coats are also usually non-shedding, making them great for those with allergies. Their low to medium energy levels also make them excellent companions, as they're happy doing a mix of activity and snuggling.
Training a Bernedoodle is easiest when you provide consistency, patience, and positive, reward-based reinforcement. Start by teaching your pup basic commands, such as sit, down, stay, and leave it, which will help you gain control over their behavior. After mastering these tasks, you can also teach more complex behaviors, such as coming when called, going to their bed on command, and walking calmly on a leash. Additionally, it's important to socialize your Bernedoodle early on to reduce fear and aggression with other people and animals.
