Questions & Answers
Bernedoodles are a relatively new hybrid breed that was first created in 2003. They are a mix of Bernese Mountain Dog and Poodle parents. These cute and cuddly pups typically have lovely wavy coats, which can be either straight or curly and come in a wide range of colors, including sable, phantom, and tri-color. They are typically very low-shedding and hypoallergenic, which makes them ideal for people with allergies. Bernedoodles can make great family pets, as they tend to be intelligent, loyal and very friendly.
Bernedoodle coats vary, but typically they tend to be either curly or wavy. The curls and waves tend to be tighter on the back, around the legs and under the body where they are protected from brushing. Coat colors can range from solid black to various shades of brown and white. The thick double coat may shed but generally not excessively due to the presence of the poodle coat. Bernedoodles typically do not need to be groomed more than 2-4 times per year and their coat isn't as prone to mats or tangles as other breeds.
Bernedoodles should be kept on a high-quality dog food that is specifically designed for their unique nutritional needs. Feeding your Bernedoodle a diet that is rich in proteins, essential fatty acids, antioxidants, and other vitamins and minerals is important for their overall health and wellbeing. Be sure to portion their meals appropriately for their size and activity level. Avoid foods that are high in calories, sugar or fat and be careful not to overfeed them. Supplementing a healthy diet with healthy treats is recommended. Also, providing plenty of clean, fresh water is important, especially in hot weather.
Before getting a Bernedoodle, you should make sure you have all the essential items they need. A secure, six-foot high fence and training tools such as a leash, collar, and harness are necessary for a Bernedoodle. You'll also need an appropriate set of food and water dishes that can accommodate their size and can help them remain healthy and hydrated. Grooming products like brushes, nail clippers, and a slicker brush will help maintain their coat's appearance.
Bernedoodles come in several sizes depending on the size of the Poodle used in its breeding, and therefore can be classified as either small, medium, or large. Generally, small and mini Bernedoodles average around 20-30 pounds and may stand as low as 14 inches tall while large Bernedoodles weigh in around 50-100 pounds and stand as tall as 28 inches. Therefore, Bernedoodles can be considered small dogs if the intended breeding was to create a mini or small size Bernedoodle.
Absolutely! Your Bernedoodle's energy level and enthusiasm for exercise makes him a great companion for running. Exercise is a great way to bond with your pup and to keep him healthy and emotionally balanced. Make sure to start slowly and gradually build up the distance and intensity as your pup gets comfortable running with you. Also, be sure to monitor your Bernedoodle's condition and make sure he is not overheating. If you must take a break, find a shaded area and take breaks every 25 to 30 minutes to give your pup time to cool off and hydrate.
Bernedoodles make excellent family dogs thanks to their sweet disposition, intelligence, and eagerness to please. They're affectionate and loyal towards caregivers and get along with children and other pets with the proper introduction and socialization. Great guards, they are also friendly and non-aggressive, making them ideal for families with small children. Bernedoodles are easy to train, and their low-shedding coats make them ideal for those who don't want the mess of a shedder.
Training a Bernedoodle effectively requires an appropriate amount of time each day. Generally, around 30 minutes per day of focused training is beneficial and can help ensure your Bernedoodle learns quickly and efficiently. This would include basic commands, socialization, and household obedience skills. Make sure to provide your Bernedoodle with rewards and fun activities throughout the training session to encourage good behavior.
