Bernedoodles are a unique and interesting breed of "designer" dog that has taken the canine world by storm. They are a relatively new breed, created through the crossing of Bernese Mountain Dogs with Poodles. This cross results in a dog with the best of both breeds a playful, energetic pup with the calm demeanor and intelligence of the Poodle, as well as the gentle, loyal nature of the Bernese Mountain Dog. Bernedoodles also have the advantage of being low to non-shedding meaning they require minimal grooming.
The Bernedoodle coat is typically soft and curly with low-to-no shedding. This breed has a unique combination of Bernese Mountain Dog and Poodle, resulting in a coat that usually includes colors like black, white, tri-colored and/or sable. Depending on the Poodle parent, the coat can range from wavy to curly and features a soft, plush texture.
Bernedoodles typically have a diet that consists of high-quality dry kibble, wet food, carbohydrates such as potatoes, fruits, vegetables, and occasionally treats. A Bernedoodle should have a diet that is rich in vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients, but free of preservatives or artificial colors. Of course, it's important to check with your vet to make sure your Bernedoodle is getting the proper nutrition and is eating the right types and amounts of food. You can also feed your Bernedoodle whole foods, such as real meat, grains, or eggs.
Before welcoming a Bernedoodle into your home, it's important to make sure that you have some essential items for their care. Some essentials to get include a large and sturdy dog crate for them to have a safe, comfortable space of their own; long-lasting and durable toys to keep them occupied; a quality dog bed to provide warmth and support; a wide and strong collar and leash; and plenty of healthy food and treats.
Bernedoodles typically grow to be quite large, depending on the size of their parents and their breeding. Typical Bernedoodle sizes are extra-small, small, medium, and standard. An extra-small Bernedoodle can reach up to 12 inches tall and weigh up to 12 pounds. Small Bernedoodles can reach up to 20 inches tall and weigh up to 30 pounds. Medium Bernedoodles can reach 24 inches tall and weigh up to 50 pounds. And the largest size, standard Bernedoodles, can grow up to 28 inches and weigh up to 90 pounds.
Bernedoodles are high energy breeds that need plenty of physical activity each day in order to stay healthy and happy. Generally, it is recommended that Bernedoodles receive around an hour of daily exercise, split into several sessions throughout the day. These may include walks, playtimes, and periodical sessions of more strenuous activity such as climbing or agility training. Doing so will ensure your Bernedoodle has the opportunity to burn off their excess energy and stay healthy and alert socially and mentally.
Bernedoodles can be great for first-time owners, provided that they understand the commitment involved in owning this breed. With proper training and socialization, Bernedoodles can make wonderful companions for inexperienced pet owners. These dogs are intelligent, easy to train, and need minimal grooming. However, Bernedoodles have relatively high energy levels, so first-time owners should be prepared to spend ample time outdoors and with toys.
Training a Bernedoodle is not necessarily an easy task, but it can be done! With patience, consistency, and dedication, you can successfully teach your Bernedoodle basic commands and etiquette. Starting off with short and simple commands such as sit, stay, come, and down are a great way to shape your Bernedoodle's behavior.
