Questions & Answers
Bernedoodles are a hybrid breed developed from Bernese Mountain Dogs and Poodles. They are incredibly intelligent and loyal pets that make great companions; they are hypoallergenic and low to non-shedding. Bernedoodles range in size from the Toy to the Standard—approximately 10-30 lbs—and have beautiful wavy coats, though their colors and patterns vary widely. They are usually very affectionate and thrive on human contact, though they may be wary of strangers at first.
Bernedoodles are often advertised as being hypoallergenic, as they are a hybrid of two different breeds a Poodle and a Bernese Mountain Dog. However, it is impossible to guarantee that the Bernedoodle will cause no allergies. Allergic reactions vary greatly among individuals, and although most Bernedoodles have low to non-shedding coats, the dander that is produced by the dog can still cause an allergic reaction.
Bernedoodles are a cross between Bernese Mountain Dog and Poodle breeds, and their unique diets must be taken into consideration when feeding them. A good rule of thumb to follow is to not feed them anything that a Bernese Mountain Dog should not eat. Human food such as chocolate, grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, and macadamia nuts are some common food items that Bernedoodles should not be eating as these can be toxic to them. Also, avoid feeding them raw meats, as this can increase their risk of getting bacterial or parasitic infections.
Preparing for a new Bernedoodle starts with making sure you have the right supplies and resources for the pup to ensure a successful integration into your family. First, think about your pup's size and find the appropriate crate for a safe and comfortable den-like atmosphere for your pup. You'll also want to stock up on food that meets your Bernedoodle's nutritional needs. Providing regular meals and snacks will help create good eating habits. You'll also want to set up a designated potty area so your puppy can learn how to go outside.
Bernedoodles come in three main sizes, which are determined by the size of their parent breeds. The smallest Bernedoodle is the Toy Bernedoodle, which is a mix of a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Toy Poodle. Usually, these pups are between 10-24 pounds and 10-14 inches tall. The next size is the Mini Bernedoodle, which is usually a mix of a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Miniature Poodle and typically these pups range between 25-49 pounds and 15-18 inches tall.
Bernedoodles, like all dog breeds, have their own unique set of needs when it comes to exercise. An ideal amount of exercise for a Bernedoodle is around 60-90 minutes per day, broken down into two to three walks a day. Depending on your individual Bernedoodle's age, energy level, and any health issues, the amount of walking time may need tweaking. For example, young Bernedoodle puppies will need less time than adult dogs and those with health issues may need time to mobilize and warm-up prior to the walk.
Generally speaking, Bernedoodles can be gentle and outgoing companions that get along well with kids. These intelligent, friendly dogs are often described as loving, energetic, and devoted family members and make a great addition to any family. They are typically patient and tolerant with children and are often especially fond of playtime. Bernedoodles generally enjoy taking part in playdates, games, and other activities, making them great canine companions for kids of all ages.
Training a Bernedoodle is not too different than training other breeds. It is important to start your pup's training as soon as possible. Begin with basic commands such as sit, stay, come, down, and heel, and use positive reinforcement with treats and praise. Socializing your Bernedoodle will help prevent any aggression or anxiety in the future. Properly expose them to different people, places, and experiences while they are young. Also, exercising your pup is important to keep them healthy and maintain their well-being.
