Questions & Answers
Bernedoodles are a hybrid breed that is the result of crossing Bernese Mountain Dogs and Poodles. This designer breed is known for its intelligence, loyalty, and energetic personality. They are recognized by the International Designer Canine Registry, and have been gaining in popularity over the past decade. Bernedoodles have a lifespan of 12-15 years and, depending on the size, can grow to weigh between 25 and 70 pounds.
Bernedoodles can vary in terms of shedding, depending on the type. F1 Bernedoodles, which are a mix of a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Standard Poodle, are low to non-shedding, and may even be hypoallergenic. F1b Bernedoodles, a cross between a F1 Bernedoodle and a Poodle, are usually non-shedding, while F2 Bernedoodles (a cross between two F1 Bernedoodles) may be low to moderate shedders.
Bernedoodles have a sensitive digestive system and, as such, it's important to know what not to feed them. The best way to determine the proper food for your Bernedoodle is to consult your veterinarian. Generally, human food, such as garlic and onions, and food with high sugar content, should not be given to Bernedoodles. Raw eggs, meat, or whole fish should also be avoided. Additionally, you should avoid giving your Bernedoodle food that has been dropped on the floor.
Bernedoodles are unique dogs that have the characteristics of a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle. Though their specific needs vary depending on coat type and size, they are generally active and need plenty of exercise and mental stimulation. Bernedoodles are particularly intelligent and require lots of positive reinforcement and training to stay on their best behavior. Grooming is also important, as their coat can grow thick and heavy and may require weekly brushing, clipping, and professional grooming every few months.
The size of your Bernedoodle puppy will largely depend on genetics and the specific parent breeds it is descended from. On average, a Bernedoodle can reach a height of 18-22 inches from the withers to the ground and can weigh between 45 and 90 pounds. However, if you are planning to take your pet to dog agility, flyball, or competitive obedience, then you should opt for the standard-sized Bernedoodle. This size usually falls between 20 and 31 inches tall and can weigh 35 to 75 pounds.
Bernedoodles, due to their energetic nature, thrive when they are active. It is recommended that Bernedoodles receive approximately 1-2 hours of exercise each day. This may include walking, running, swimming, playing fetch in the yard, as well as engaging in activities that stimulate both their mind and body. Exercise also helps promote a healthy weight in Bernedoodles and assists in preventing behavior issues that may arise from a lack of physical activity. Exercise may even include visits to the groomer, veterinarian, or doggie daycare for socialization.
Bernedoodles are an excellent pick for first-time owners, as they are generally easy to train and have low exercise needs. They combine the loyalty and intelligence of a Poodle with the strength and amiability of a Bernese Mountain Dog, making them well-known as a "family-friendly" hybrid breed. Bernedoodles are considerably less demanding than many other breeds, and their gentle nature and moderate size makes them suitable for homes of all shapes and sizes.
The amount of time you need to spend training your Bernedoodle each day will depend on several factors, such as how old the dog is and the goal you are working toward. A general rule of thumb is that the more you devote to training the better your Bernedoodle will be, so aim to spend at least 30 minutes of training each day. You can split this up into 10 minute sessions at different times of the day, or spend a full 30 minutes on one exercise. Make sure to start with basic commands and then build on and reinforce any new lesson you teach.
