Questions & Answers
A Bernedoodle is a hybrid cross between a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle. It is categorized as a designer dog, meaning it has been bred intentionally and selectively for specific physical and behavioral characteristics and qualities. Because of the Poodle's hypoallergenic coat, Bernedoodles tend to have curly, low-or non-shedding coats that make them especially advantageous for those with allergies. Managed and bred responsibly, Bernedoodles are active, loyal, and affectionate dogs.
The Bernedoodle coat is generally a medium-length, wavy coat with moderate climate tolerance. Depending on the proportion of Bernese Mountain Dog to Poodle that was used in a particular mating, the Bernedoodle's coat could range from relatively straight to quite curly. In addition, Bernedoodles come in a variety of colors and patterns, such as tricolor (black, white and brown), the "phantom" Bernedoodle with smudges around the eyes and muzzle, and the sable Bernedoodle with black tips on the fur.
Learning what not to feed your Bernedoodle is an important part of your pup's nutrition and health. Because Bernedoodles are a crossbreed, you'll want to consult a veterinarian or dog nutrition specialist to ensure they are getting all the nutrition they need. Additionally, there are certain foods you should avoid to keep your Bernedoodle healthy. Take care to avoid table scraps, foods high in fat, unhealthy snacks, and human food with excessive amounts of sugar, sodium, and preservatives.
Preparing for a new Bernedoodle is an exciting and rewarding process, and there are several steps you should take to ensure your new pup has a positive start in your home. First, familiarize yourself on the Bernedoodle breed, their needs, and behaviors. Next, make sure your home is pet-proof by removing any small objects that may be choking hazards, or anything that could pose a threat to your Bernedoodle. Additionally, purchase food, treats, toys, a bed, a collar, and a leash everything you need for your new pup.
Bernedoodles come in a variety of sizes, ranging from miniature to large, so it really depends on the size of the individual dog. Generally speaking, Bernedoodles who measure 13-20 inches and weigh between 20-50 lbs are classified as small, while ones who measure 21-29 inches and weigh between 51-90 lbs are considered medium. Bernedoodles above 29 inches and 90 lbs are categorized as large. Because of the wide range of sizes, Bernedoodles could be considered either small or medium, depending on the particular breed.
It depends on a few factors, such as the age, size, and activity level of your Bernedoodle. Generally speaking, puppies and young Bernedoodles should be given around 30 minutes of exercise per day, while older adults should get around 20 minutes. But regardless of age, you should also factor in any recent activity or exercise your Bernedoodle has had (including playtime). You should also take into account the climate if you're taking your Bernedoodle on walks outside during the day. In extreme temperature conditions, 10-15 minutes may be enough.
Yes, Bernedoodles tend to get along well with children. Highly intelligent and loving, Bernedoodles can often be seen cuddling with or playing with their young friends. Their gentle, loyal, and patient disposition, combined with their protective nature, makes them excellent companions for kids who are looking for a furry friend to curl up with or romp around with in the yard. Additionally, Bernedoodles are often non-shedding, meaning there's no mess and plenty of snuggles.
The amount of training your Bernedoodle needs each day really depends on factors such as age, health, energy levels, and the desired behaviors. Generally, though, when it comes to obedience training, it is suggested to provide your Bernedoodle with around 20 to 30 minutes of active training a day. You can then add on additional training for socialization and/or specific behaviors that you are trying to teach. If you are consistent with this amount of training each day, then you can expect overall progress over time.
