Questions & Answers
One of the most interesting aspects of Bernedoodles is their combination of personalities from both the Bernese Mountain Dog and the Poodle parent breeds. This means that they tend to have a pleasant and loving demeanor, while still being friendly, loyal, and protective. Additionally, Bernedoodles boast a low-shedding coat, which makes them perfect for families with allergies or anyone who doesn't want to deal with shedding. Furthermore, these hybrid dogs are highly trainable and amazingly smart, making them great companions for hikers, runners, and campers.
Bernedoodles are usually a hypoallergenic breed, meaning they are less likely to cause allergies than other dog breeds. This doesn't mean they are completely allergy-proof, but studies have found that breeds such as the Bernedoodle are less likely to produce the dander and saliva that can lead to allergic reactions. While the Bernedoodle's coat is made up of both Poodle and Bernese Mountain Dog, they have been bred with Poodles to try and reduce the allergens in their genes.
Bernedoodles, a cross between Bernese Mountain Dogs and Poodles, need a diet rich in proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals. Their food should include a variety of high-quality dry kibble for preventative health benefits and a combination of wet dog food, homemade, or raw food for taste and variation.
Bernedoodles typically require some amount of grooming in order to keep their distinct mixed coat looking great. Since they are a hybrid of the Bernese Mountain Dog and the Poodle, the amount of grooming required will depend on which coat type the pup inherits from each parent. Generally speaking, the more poodle texture the Bernedoodle has in its coat, the more regular maintenance it will require. Bernedoodle pup owners may need to regularly brush and comb through the coat to prevent knots and tangles, and may need to have the pup clipped and bathed occasionally.
Bernedoodles come in a variety of sizes, ranging from small to large depending on the parent breeds used in breeding. The smallest Bernedoodles are a cross between a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Toy Poodle and have an adult weight of around 15 to 35 pounds. A cross between a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Mini Poodle is considered a medium Bernedoodle and generally grows to be between 30 and 45 pounds. The largest Bernedoodle is a cross between a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Standard Poodle and may reach up to 90 pounds when fully grown.
Bernedoodles are known to love playing in the water and are known to be strong swimmers. Their thick coat provides insulation against the cold and protection from the sun’s rays, and their paws help them paddle through water as they run and play with paddle toys. Bernedoodles, being part poodle, have been groomed and used for water sports like duck and goose hunting and serve as great assistance dogs for scuba diving and swimming. They are also able to smell substances in the water, making them great surf lifesavers or even rescue dogs.
Bernedoodles make excellent family dogs and are great companions for children. With their intelligent and affectionate natures, Bernedoodles can make wonderful playmates who will always be up for a game. They have a goofy and silly sense of humor, and their size can be perfect for kids who want to play catch or build a fort. Additionally, their gentle, loving demeanors allow them to get along well with other animals. Bernedoodles are also known for being dedicated, loyal friends. All this makes them fantastic pets for families with children.
Training Bernedoodles requires an investment of your time and energy; however, it is important that you don't overdo it. Generally, it's recommended to begin with shorter training sessions and build up to longer ones over time. An ideal training routine would begin with 5-10 minutes per day at first. Once your Bernedoodle has adapted to the routine, you can add more time as needed up to 20-30 minutes at a time. Breaking the training up into multiple brief sessions can be beneficial, rather than trying to do it all in one long session.
