Questions & Answers
Bernedoodles are a hybrid cross between a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle. They are a relatively newer breed, but they are quickly becoming popular due to their friendly temperament and intelligence. Bernedoodles are very social dogs and get along well with other animals and children. They can grow to be anywhere from mini-sized, standing around 20 pounds and 12-13 inches tall to Standard, coming in at 25-50 pounds and 23-29 inches tall.
Bernedoodles are often referred to as hypoallergenic, but they are not technically hypoallergenic. There are various factors that contribute to Bernedoodles being a good choice for people with allergies, such as their non-shedding coat. Plus, the hybrid genes of the Bernedoodle provide hybrid vigor, which means it has greater immunity to allergies. However, Bernedoodles still have the potential to trigger allergic reactions as no dog is completely hypoallergenic.
With its hybrid energy needs, the Bernedoodle might require a special formula of dog food. A good option would be a quality commercial brand that's designed for medium-sized breeds, like Hill's Science Diet. It offers a variety of protein sources, and all-natural, balanced nutrition. Look for a formula specifically designed for Bernedoodles since it will contain all the necessary nutrients for your pup's particular needs. Another option is a raw food diet.
Before your new Bernedoodle joins your home, there are a few steps you should take to prepare your home. First, inspect all furniture and floors for any holes or sharp edges, as this may cause injury to your new pup. Second, ensure you have all the necessary supplies like puppy food, bowls, bedding, and toys. Third, designate an area that is puppy proof. Remove or secure any items the puppy could chew to harm themselves. Fourth, find a local veterinarian and ensure your pup's vaccines and health care needs are taken care of.
Every Bernedoodle puppy varies in size depending on its parent breeds, the Bernese Mountain Dog and the Poodle. Generally, if both parents are of a standard size, the Bernedoodle will mature to a larger size and weight, often weighing between 70 to 120 pounds and standing 24 to 29 inches at the shoulders. Conversely, if one or both parents are toy or miniature varieties, the Bernedoodle may reach a smaller size, usually within the range of 10 to 50 pounds with a shoulder height of 14 to 24 inches.
Bernedoodles are a moderately active breed of dog and require moderate amounts of exercise. On average, they need at least thirty minutes of exercise per day, such as a long walk or a good play session. To keep them mentally stimulated and physically fit, regular exercise and playtime with their owners are important for this breed. Bernedoodles are quite trainable and enjoy activities such as obedience classes, agility competitions, and long hikes. When given room to roam, it's important to ensure that the area is safely contained for the dog's own safety.
Definitely! Bernedoodles are known to be great family dogs, so much so that they have earned a reputation for being the perfect addition to any family home. They are known for being incredibly devoted to their owners and very easy to train. Bernedoodles are also highly intelligent and surprisingly eager to please. Additionally, these dogs are very social; they are rarely aggressive and get along well with people and other animals. Plus, they are gentle, loving, and loyal companions. All of these traits make Bernedoodles wonderful family dogs.
Training a Bernedoodle can be a fun and rewarding experience if done correctly. First, ensure that your pup has a solid foundation in basic obedience commands such as "sit", "stay", "come" and "down". These will help in all areas of further training. When beginning more specific training, such as agility, be sure to use positive reinforcement instead of punishment, as Bernedoodles are sensitive dogs. Give lots of treats and praise when they do something correctly. Break tasks down into smaller parts to make them easier for your pup to understand and remember.
