Questions & Answers
Bernedoodles are a hybrid breed of dog that is the result of crossbreeding a Bernese Mountain Dog with a Poodle. They are classified as part of the 'Designer Dogs' group since they are not recognized by the American Kennel Club. Generally, these dogs have a kind and affectionate demeanor with their families, while being alert and agile. They come in a variety of sizes and color combinations, but tend to have fluffy coats that require regular brushing.
The Bernedoodle coat is incredibly unique. It has a combination of the coat of both its parent breeds, the Bernese Mountain Dog and the Poodle. Generally, the coat is a bit of a mix between a long, thick, wavy coat of a Bernese, and a finer, curlier coat of a Poodle. It's a hypoallergenic coat that's very low-shedding and can range from wavy to curly depending on the generation and ratio of the Bernese and Poodle.
Bernedoodles, like all breeds, have their own unique needs when it comes to diet. They require an appropriate, balanced nutritional diet consisting of high quality proteins, carbohydrates and fats for optimal health. Similarly, the breed is also prone to occasional digestive upset and needs to follow a diet that heavily relies on fresh fruits and vegetables. As the breed also has the potential to be a bit on the heavier side, they may benefit from controlled portion sizes and a moderate amount of activity.
If you're considering bringing a Bernedoodle into your family, it's important to ensure you're adequately prepared. Research the breed and make sure their traits match your lifestyle. Set up your home by purchasing the appropriate supplies, such as a comfortable bed, sturdy crate, dog food, as well as toys and treats. Hire a professional dog trainer to teach your pup basic commands (like sit, sit stay, come, leave it) to ensure an easier transition into your home.
Bernedoodles come in a variety of sizes ranging from Toy (7-15 lbs) to Standard (50-75 lbs). The medium size can vary depending on the parents, usually ranging from 25-45 lbs, and are referred to as Miniature, Medium, or Moyen. These wonderfully versatile dogs can be meant for different lifestyles and offer a great balance of Bernese Mountain Dog and Poodle traits. Mini Bernedoodles offer soft, luxurious coats like the Poodle, while Toy and Standard Bernedoodles offer longer-haired coats from the Bernese Mountain Dog.
Bernedoodles are highly active and energetic dogs, and therefore need ample exercise and stimulation to remain healthy. Ideally, Bernedoodles should get at least one to two hours of exercise daily. This can take the form of a long walk, a jog, or a good game of fetch. Additionally, daily mental stimulation through learning new tricks or challenging puzzle toys is also important for Bernedoodles. Without sufficient exercise and stimulation, Bernedoodles may become bored and potentially destructive.
Bernedoodles are excellent family dogs. They are alert, loyal, and intelligent, which makes them great companions. Because of their combination of two breeds, they are highly intelligent and come with a unique set of traits. Bernedoodles are also easy to train and highly social, which means you can trust them around your children and other family members. Bernedoodles are highly attentive, which makes them ideal for families who want an active dog to keep up with them. Their combination of playful and affectionate traits ensures Bernedoodles make excellent pets for children and adults alike.
The amount of time spent training Bernedoodles per day will depend on a number of factors, such as the Bernedoodle's age, temperament, and the desired result. Generally speaking, most experts would recommend at least 30 minutes of training per day. However, some Bernedoodles may require more or less depending on the individual dog and the environment. It's important to remember that while a 30 minute training session can be beneficial, it's just as important to devote time for constructive play and socialization throughout the day.
