Questions & Answers
Bernedoodles are a hybrid cross between a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle. They are lovable, playful dogs that range from 20-80 pounds in size, making them a great choice for many types of families. Bernedoodles can come in a variety of colors, from black to slate gray, tan and white. They are often used as therapy dogs and see great success in this field. Bernedoodles typically have low-shedding coats that require regular grooming, and their outgoing personalities make them great family dogs.
Bernedoodles are considered to be low-shedding dogs, making them an ideal breed for people who are prone to allergies. They have a combination of a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle, which produces a hypoallergenic coat. The Bernedoodle's coat can vary depending on the ratio of Poodle to Bernese Mountain Dog genes, but generally, their coats shed very lightly, so it should not present much of an issue for people with allergies.
Bernedoodles typically eat a high-quality, balanced, nutrient-dense dry food approved by a veterinarian to keep their energy up throughout the day. Along with their commercial food, they might enjoy a few snacks like carrots, apples, green beans, or bananas. It's important to keep in mind that the amount of food a Bernedoodle needs depends on their size and activity level. Feeding your Bernedoodle twice a day in smaller portions can help keep their weight at a healthy level. Remember to always keep fresh water accessible at all times.
Bernedoodles are considered to be a relatively low-maintenance breed, however they do still require some special care. It's important to brush their coat two to three times a week to ensure that shedding and matting are reduced, and regular grooming is recommended to keep their coat and nails in good condition. Bernedoodles do need regular exercise, as they are a high energy breed. Walks, hikes, and playtime should be daily, so they have the opportunity to exercise both their mind and body.
Bernedoodles may be considered small dogs depending on the size of the parent breeds used. Standard Bernedoodles (from parent breeds of Bernese Mountain Dog and Standard Poodle) often reach 25-35 inches tall and weigh 70-90 pounds. Mini Bernedoodles (from Miniature or Toy Poodle) are typically much smaller, usually reaching 15-20 inches and weighing about 15-25 pounds. Although these are average sizes, as with all mixed breeds, each puppy is unique and their size can vary slightly.
Bernedoodles require an extensive amount of exercise each day to help them stay healthy and maintain their energy levels. They have a lot of energy and need plenty of physical and mental stimulation to remain happy. Ideally, they should have around two hours of moderate to vigorous exercise throughout the day. This should include activities like walks, runs, playtime, and obedience training. A good rule of thumb is to give them at least one hour of exercise on a daily basis, but they could easily use more if available.
Bernedoodles can be an excellent choice for first-time owners. Their temperament is typically gentle and affectionate, so they can be a good match for people just getting started with pet ownership. Bernedoodles are also typically quite intelligent and trainable, meaning you can spend quality time teaching them commands and tricks. They tend to get along well with (and bond to) their owners, making them good at providing companionship. Additionally, these dogs require relatively low grooming, making them a breeze to manage.
The amount of minutes per day that you should commit to training a Bernedoodle can vary depending on the age and expertise of the pup. However, a minimum of 15-20 minutes per day is strongly recommended. This will give your Bernedoodle enough time to practice basic behaviors such as potty training, learning their name, coming when called, walking on a leash, and responding to basic commands. If you have a pup who is more advanced in their training, you may want to add more time and/or challenge to their training sessions.
