Bernedoodles are relatively new designer breeds, first having been bred in 2003. They are a cross between a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle. With an adorable mix of intelligence and cuteness, Bernedoodles make great companions for all types of owners! They are also very popular due to their hypoallergenic coats. They weigh anywhere from 25 to 60 pounds and, depending on their genetics, may get curly or wavy coats which come in a variety of colors.
Bernedoodles are not considered hypoallergenic, as they can cause allergic reactions in people who are sensitive to dander. Although it's true that Bernedoodles do not shed as excessively as other breeds, their coats are a combination of both poodle and Bernese mountain dog fur, both of which are known to produce their own dander. However, due to their low-shedding coats, Bernedoodles are still considered an excellent breed for people who suffer from pet allergies.
To be sure you provide your Bernedoodle with the best nutrition, it is important to know what food and treats are safe for them to consume. Generally, Bernedoodles should not be given any food that is high in fat or sugar or certain human foods that are toxic to dogs. Avoid giving your Bernedoodle rawhide, pork, onions, alcohol, grape, raisin, macadamia nuts, chocolates, avocados, garlic, and yeast dough. Additionally, make sure to stick to little or no table scraps as this can lead to digestive upset.
Before getting any pet, it is important to be prepared and having the essential items is necessary for a Bernedoodle. The items you should get include a leash, collar, food and water dishes, a comfortable, age-appropriate bed that is easy enough for them to get into, chew toys, a brush or comb, and nail clippers. You'll also want to consider items such as dog safety gates, a dog crate, puppy pads to help improve housebreaking, and a sweeper or vacuum for clean up.
Bernedoodles come in a variety of sizes, ranging from toy to standard size. Toy Bernedoodles usually weigh around 10-25 lbs, while standard size Bernedoodles can be between 55-90 lbs. Therefore, while some Bernedoodles may be classified as small, others may be considered medium-sized or larger. Also, because Bernedoodles are a hybrid of both Bernese Mountain Dogs and Poodles, factors such as the size, health and characteristics of the parent dogs will influence the size and growth of the hybrid litter.
