Questions & Answers
Bernedoodles are a hybrid between a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle. They are generally sociable, low-shedding dogs that make excellent companions and family pets. Bernedoodles come in three sizes: standard, miniature, and toy. Choosing the right size will depend on the size of your home and family. It's important to keep in mind that all Bernedoodle pups require a lot of attention and exercise. Regular grooming is also required and, depending on the coat type, can range from weekly brushing to professional grooming every four to six weeks.
Bernedoodles can be very beneficial for allergy sufferers, as they are generally hypo-allergenic due to their hybrid nature. However, for optimal allergy management, it is important to keep the area where your Bernedoodle lives clean and free from allergens, such as pollen, dust and dander. Vacuuming regularly and blocking off the areas that your pet might come in contact with can help reduce exposure. Additionally, keep in mind that Bernedoodles need to be groomed often, with a minimum of bi-weekly brushing.
Bernedoodles, like all varieties of dogs, benefit from a diet designed to meet their nutritional needs. Generally, a Bernedoodle's diet should include high quality protein, healthy fats, complex carbohydrates, and a variety of vitamins and minerals. Depending on age and activity level, it is recommended that adult Bernedoodles are fed between 2 and 3 cups of food per day, split into two separate meals. Bernedoodles may thrive on a raw diet and other fresh foods, such as fruits and vegetables, but may also enjoy kibble and wet food.
Researching the Bernedoodle breed and understanding what care they need can help you become the best puppy parent. Educating yourself on their diet, exercise, socialization, and training requirements can go a long way in helping you prepare for bringing home your Bernedoodle. Additionally, setting up their environment and making sure that they will have everything they need before they arrive will help you become a better puppy parent.
The size of your Bernedoodle puppy is difficult to predict since it will be a mix of both a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle, and both breeds vary in size. Generally, at maturity, the Bernedoodle can range in size from 18 to 90 pounds, depending upon your breeding program; you may find that your Bernedoodle will be a small, medium or large size when fully grown. You should also keep in mind that Bernedoodles may take 18-24 months to reach their full adult size.
You can certainly take your Bernedoodle running if they are up to the task. Most Bernedoodles are energetic and have the right physiology to handle “canicross”: running with your doodle attached to a belt (while leashed). It is best to first and foremost consult your veterinarian to make sure your Bernedoodle is healthy enough to run and get a check-up before beginning any type of regular exercise. Additionally, you should make sure your Bernedoodle is comfortable in their harness and that your running route is adequately planned and safe.
Bernedoodles generally make excellent family pets and get along very well with kids. They are a mix of two breeds that are predisposed to have a fun-loving, sweet, and goofy disposition, which makes them ideal companions for youngsters. Bernedoodles also tend to be very loyal and intelligent, making them well-suited for playtime as well as training. With a good amount of socialization and supervised play, Bernedoodles can build strong bonds with children and fit in right away with any family dynamic.
Training a Bernedoodle certainly can be easy, but it's important to consider the individual characteristics of the dog. Bernedoodles can be quite intelligent and they often pick up on commands quickly, however if they don't have guidance and consistency with training, they can become slightly unruly. As with any breed, it's important to be patient and reward behavior you like without scolding or becoming angry when the dog doesn't pick up a command. Regular, positive reinforcement and consistency will help this pup learn quickly and easily, so it's essential to set aside time dedicated to training.
