Questions & Answers
Bernedoodles are hybrid breeds that display a combination of both Bernese Mountain Dog and Poodle characteristics. They are usually at least 50% Poodle and at least 50% Bernese Mountain Dog, and they are classified as designer dogs. However, Bernedoodles vary depending on the particular mix of the two breeds. For example, a standard Bernedoodle will have a Bernese Mountain Dog parent and a Standard Poodle parent, while a miniature or toy Bernedoodle will have a smaller parent.
The Bernedoodle coat is a combination of both Poodle and Bernese Mountain Dog traits. They have a medium-length, wavy, and slightly fluffy coat that is low-shedding, but slightly thicker compared to the Poodle's coat. The Bernedoodle boasts an array of coat color options with deep colors such as black, chocolate, and sable being the most common. All colors and combinations are possible, including the popular tri-color version, with the quality of the coat being exceptionally soft, slightly wavy, and thick.
Generally, Bernedoodles have the same dietary needs as other dogs, and should be fed a balanced diet of high-quality food that is appropriate for their age, weight, breed, and activity level. However, like all breeds, some Bernedoodles may have individual digestive or food sensitivities that require a special diet. If your Bernedoodle begins to exhibit signs of allergies, such as itching, excessive licking, or difficulty digesting certain types of food, it is important to talk to your veterinarian about modifying their diet and/or introducing food specifically formulated for sensitive tummies.
Before bringing home a Bernedoodle, you should make sure you have some necessary items. First, you should purchase an appropriate size collar, leash and harness. You may also want to buy chew toys, a bed or crate, food and water dishes, treats, and food. To make life easier, you should stock up on grooming items, such as grooming wipes, nail clippers, shampoo, brushes, and combs, as Bernedoodles have a double coat which will need regular maintenance.
Bernedoodles can grow to quite a large size, depending on their parents. Generally, adult Bernedoodles range from 25 to 35 inches in height and can weigh between 50 and 75 pounds. However, some Bernedoodle varieties, such as the Giant Bernedoodle, can weigh well over 100 pounds! On the other hand, the smaller Mini Bernedoodle can mature to around 10 to 15 inches and weigh around 15 to 25 pounds. Regardless of their size, many people find Bernedoodles to be a great pet choice of their unique mix of lovable personalities!
Bernedoodles generally require a moderate amount of exercise. They are usually well-suited for a wide range of activities, such as walking, running, hiking, swimming, and even agility courses. They don't tolerate too much exercise, however, so it is important to pay attention to your Bernedoodle's energy level and make sure they are not over-exerting themselves. Since Bernedoodles are hybrid dogs, their activity needs may vary, so it is recommended to gradually build up the amount of exercise over time, rather than introducing it all at once.
Bernedoodles are often an excellent choice for first-time owners. These dogs are highly intelligent, energetic, and loyal. Bernedoodles can be trained easily with consistent and positive reinforcement. This breed also has a laid-back and friendly personality, making them enjoyable companions. In addition, Bernedoodles rarely bark excessively, which can be preferable for those living in a densely populated area. Ultimately, Bernedoodles are considered to be an ideal family pet for novice owners, as well as experienced owners.
Training a Bernedoodle requires a consistent and gentle approach. Begin teaching the puppy basic commands such as sit, stay, come, and lie down. Start small and gradually increase complexity and duration of each command. Include rewards like treats and verbal praise after the dog has completed the task. It is important to provide ample opportunities for the Bernedoodle to explore and have fun during the training sessions. As the puppy learns, add socialization components like regular walks and trips to the dog park. To reinforce learning, repeat training sessions briefly every day.
