Questions & Answers
A Bernedoodle is a cross between a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle. The Bernedoodle is an increasingly popular hybrid breed, prized for its intelligence, loving temperament, and lowto no-shedding coat. Since Bernese Mountain Dogs and Poodles are both intelligent and easily trainable, their combination results in an extremely smart breed with a gentle, loyal nature. Furthermore, Bernedoodles often appear in a range of colors and styles due to the diverse colors of the Bernese Mountain Dog and the many sizes of the Poodle.
Most Bernedoodles are considered to be hypoallergenic due to their poodle-mix parentage. However, it's still possible that some people may experience allergic reactions to Bernedoodles. Non-shedding Bernedoodles may also be less likely to cause allergies. Ultimately, the best way to know if Bernedoodles will cause you allergies is to visit a breeder or Bernedoodle-owner and spend time around them if you experience a reaction, they are likely not the right dog breed for you.
Knowing what not to feed Bernedoodles is important to keeping them healthy and safe. It's best to consult with your veterinarian and read up on Bernedoodle diet information to ensure you are providing them with the proper nutrition. Additionally, there are certain foods that are known to be toxic to dogs, and you should always avoid those. These include chocolate, macadamia nuts, grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, and avocados, as well as anything with a lot of sugar or salt.
Becoming the best puppy parent while you are waiting for your Bernedoodle is an exciting prospect! First and foremost, make sure you know as much as you can about Bernedoodles in general. Research their temperament, exercise habits, feeding requirements, and other important information. Once you have a good foundation of knowledge, create a welcoming and inviting home environment for your pup. Set up an area where your pup can feel safe and secure. Provide plenty of toys and chew items that are safe and appropriate for your Bernedoodle's age.
Bernedoodles could be considered small dogs in comparison to some other breeds. Their average height usually ranges from 14 to 24 inches and their weight is generally between 10 to 50 pounds. Bernedoodles come in an array of sizes, from Extra Mini, Extra Small, Small, Medium, Large, and Extra Large. Generally speaking, Bernedoodles that are on the smaller side of the breed’s size range, such as Extra Small or Small Bernedoodles, would be considered small dogs.
Bernedoodles typically need quite a bit of exercise to stay healthy and happy. On average, it's good to aim for at least an hour of physical activity daily, although it can vary from dog to dog. Because Bernedoodles have a lot of energy, it would be beneficial to plan activities such as walks, jogs, hikes, swimming, and even playing ball or Frisbee. Depending on individual energy levels, some Bernedoodles may require even more than an hour of exercise each day.
Bernedoodles are incredibly affectionate, patient, and loving companions when it comes to interacting with children. They can be both active and docile, allowing for hours of playtime or happy cuddles. The Bernedoodle's intelligence also makes them easy to teach commands, lessons, and new behaviors to create a trusting relationship between the four-legged friend and their human family. This intelligent, loyal, and people-pleasing characteristics make the Bernedoodle the perfect, playful and companionable pet for families with children.
Training your Bernedoodle requires dedication and consistency, but the amount of time necessary varies depending on the individual dog's age, energy level, and breed-specific traits. Generally speaking, your Bernedoodle should get a minimum of 30-60 minutes of meaningful exercise every day. This can include activities such as going for leisurely walks, playing fetch, or joining in on agility or obedience classes. Keep in mind that if you exercise them too much, you risk overworking them—it's important to find the right balance for your pup's energy level.
