Questions & Answers
Bernedoodles are a popular hybrid crossbreed of Bernese Mountain dogs and Poodles. They are an incredibly cute, smart, and loyal breed that typically range from 30 to 90 pounds. As a highly intelligent breed, Bernedoodles can be easily trained and bond quickly to their human family. They are, however, a very energetic breed and require daily exercise. Bernedoodles are known for being loving and affectionate and can make great family pets as well as therapy dogs.
Bernedoodles typically have a soft and wavy coat, which is a combination of the Bernese Mountain Dog and the Poodle coats. The length can range from short to medium, and sometimes, with crosses between the two breeds of different sizes, it can be longer. The texture of the coat can also range from silky to wiry, depending on the parentage, and all colors and color combinations are possible. Therefore, each Bernedoodle has their own unique coat that you can tailor to your preference by selecting a specific sire and dame.
Knowing what not to feed Bernedoodles is important for their health and wellbeing. The best way to ensure that you are aware of what should and shouldn't be given to them is to research their diet requirements. Generally, Bernedoodles should be given a protein-rich diet of high quality dog food, supplemented with some fresh produce. Human food should be avoided as much as possible, particularly those that are high in fat, sugar, and salt, as these can lead to health problems.
Bernedoodles do have unique needs that should be kept in mind when considering whether or not this breed is a good fit for your lifestyle. Like all dogs, Bernedoodles need regular at-home grooming to keep their coats and skin healthy, and this may require a professional groomer for certain coat types. They have higher-than-average energy levels, so regular exercise is needed to keep them healthy and prevent boredom-related mischief. They're intelligent dogs that can pick up commands quickly, but mental stimulation should also be provided to avoid unwanted behaviors.
Bernedoodles come in a variety of sizes, ranging from tiny to giant! In general, Bernedoodles can range from 18 inches in height to over 30 inches. Tiny Bernedoodles or 'Micro' Bernedoodles typically weigh between 10-20lbs, while Mini Bernedoodles weigh between 20-30lbs. Small Standard Bernedoodles and Standard Bernedoodles typically weigh between 40-60lbs. And lastly, Giant Bernedoodles typically weigh over 60lbs.
Bernedoodles can usually be found splashing around in the water! They often have a huge passion for swimming, especially if they have had early exposure to the water when young. Not only do they enjoy the physical activity and the cooling sensation of the water, but they also appreciate the stimulation of scent that comes with swimming. Bernedoodles' thick, double coats are ideal for warm water and cold water alike, making them ideal canine swimmers. Additionally, Bernedoodles may be drawn to water the way their Bernese Mountain Dog side is drawn to snow for the same reasons.
Bernedoodles are generally great with kids! They are an intelligent and loyal breed that loves to please their owners and be around children. Bernedoodles often become strongly attached and possessive of their owners, particularly if they were raised in the same family from an early age. As long as you stay consistent with them and properly socialize them with children and other animals, Bernedoodles can be wonderful family companions.
The amount of time needed to train Bernedoodles each day will depend largely on the individual pup, their natural inclination towards obedience, and the goals you wish to reach with the training. Generally speaking, an average Bernedoodle should receive at least 15-20 minutes of training every day and should have some form of mental stimulation regularly. For puppies and dogs with a strong aptitude and hunger for learning, it may be possible to work for up to one hour per day. Regardless of the daily amount, training should be consistent and aim to reinforce positive and desired behaviors.
