Questions & Answers
Bernedoodles are a hybrid breed created by crossing a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle. They combine the friendliness of the Bernese and the intelligence of the Poodle, making them an ideal family companion. Bernedoodles come in both Standard and Miniature sizes and many coat combinations. They are generally very kid-friendly, enjoy playing, and can learn tricks quickly. Bernedoodles tend to do better in households with an active lifestyle. They require regular brushing and regular grooming appointments to keep their coat in good condition.
Bernedoodles can be both low and high shedders, depending on their particular lineage. If their parent Bernese Mountain Dog is a low shedder and they are bred with a non-shedding Poodle they tend to be low level shedders. However, if the Bernese Mountain Dog is a higher shedder, the Bernedoodle may also shed modestly. Some Bernedoodles have a coat with wiry strands which feels almost like human hair and generally doesn't shed, but there may be a few wispy strays in between groomings.
Bernedoodles typically have the same basic dietary needs as other breeds of dogs. They should be fed a high-quality diet formulated for a large-breed dog, as these diets provide the necessary nutrients for a Bernedoodle's growth and development. They do, however, have some particular dietary challenges due to the variety in their coat textures, which could cause them to have sensitivities to certain types of food.
Becoming the best puppy parent while you wait for your Bernedoodle will require preparation and commitment. You can start by researching puppy breeds and essential health and care information so that you know how to provide reinforcement training, proper nutrition, exercise, and socialization. This way you will be better prepared before you bring home your new pup. Additionally, look into what daily tasks will be needed to ensure proper house training, build obedience, and create a safe and peaceful environment for your doggie.
Bernedoodles come in a variety of sizes, ranging from miniature to standard. Miniature Bernedoodles can weigh up to 20 pounds when fully grown, while standard can reach up to 70 pounds. Within this range, the sizes generally correspond to the growth of the parents, so it's important to know the breed and sizes of the Bernese Mountain dog and Poodle parents when buying a Bernedoodle puppy.
Bernedoodles require the same amount of exercise as any other larger breed of dog at least one hour of moderately intense physical activity daily. This could include taking your Bernedoodle for a long walk or run, playing fetch, swimming, agility courses, and structured obedience training. Depending on your Bernedoodle's age and health, you may need to adjust this amount of physical activity accordingly. You should also ensure your Bernedoodle is getting plenty of mental stimulation, as this can help them stay focused and avoid feeling overly bored or frustrated.
Bernedoodles are known for their loving, gentle, and intelligent natures, making them very suitable for life with children. Not only are Bernedoodles tolerant of the energy and curiosity that comes with having kids in the home, but they are also eager to please. They will happily adapt to whatever comes their way, so if the kids want to spend time playing in the yard or taking a nap, Bernedoodles are the perfect companion.
Training a Bernedoodle is an endeavour that will require patience, dedication, and consistency. But the good news is that, most Bernedoodles are eager to please and can learn quickly. The key to an effective training program is to use positive reinforcement and not to punish incorrect responses. Positive reinforcement helps your pup to associate behaviour with reward which are both essential for proper development. Additionally, it's important to use consistent commands, repeat training sessions regularly, and give your pup plenty of time to take breaks in between.
