Questions & Answers
Bernedoodles are a hybrid, designer breed that is a combination of Bernese Mountain Dogs and Poodles. These dogs typically combine the best of both breeds, such as the Bernese's kind and gentle nature, along with the intelligence and hypoallergenic qualities of Poodles. Bernedoodles are categorized as "companion" dogs and can range in size, from mini to standard. This breed loves to spend time with their owners and is known to be smart, loyal and easy to train.
Bernedoodles are a hybrid breed of two purebreds; the Bernese Mountain Dog and the Poodle. Since both these breeds have low shed coats, Bernedoodles are considered hypoallergenic, meaning they are less likely to cause an adverse reaction in people with allergies. This is due to their lack of shedding and the fact that their coats are more like a human hair than the fur of other breeds.
Bernedoodles typically eat what is known as a high-quality, premium kibble. These kibbles are specifically tailored to their size and exercise level, providing them with the right amount of calories and nutrients that they need to stay healthy. If you choose to feed your Bernedoodle wet or raw food, most experts recommend feeding a combination of the two. In addition, providing dental chews and homemade treats, such as fruits and vegetables, can also help supplement their daily meals. Be sure to consult with your vet for an appropriate nutritional plan for your Bernedoodle.
To ensure a smooth transition and establish a positive connection with your Bernedoodle, it's important to fully prepare your home before their arrival. Begin by puppy-proofing your living space and making sure your floors are sturdy with no loose wires or cords that your pup could chew on. Gather the necessary supplies, such as food and water bowls, bedding, toys, treats, and grooming tools. Make sure you have the right kind and size of crate, as well as plenty of durable chew toys to keep your pet entertained.
Bernedoodles can be considered big dogs depending on the type and size of the parents used for breeding. Some Bernedoodle parents are Standard Poodles and Bernese Mountain Dogs which both tend to have larger than average build sizes and can range from 20 to 30 inches tall. Other Bernedoodles may be F1Bs, which are a mix of a Bernedoodle and a Poodle, and are a generation smaller than F1s, and are more likely to be between 15 and 20 inches tall.
Bernedoodles are typically quite active dogs, needing regular exercise and attention to thrive. While they don’t require an immense amount of physical activity, they do need regular stimulation which can be achieved through activities such as playing fetch, long walks, hikes, going to the dog park and swimming. As social animals, Bernedoodles also need plenty of mental engagement, and regular playtime with their family is essential. They also have a low boredom threshold so it’s important to give them mental stimulation to discourage destructive habits.
Bernedoodles are excellent family dogs as they are loyal, intelligent, and affectionate. In addition to being low-shedding and hypoallergenic, Bernedoodles are highly trainable, making them a manageable choice for new owners. Their sociable nature makes them a great match for a home with children, as they will always be up for a game or a walk. Aside from physical exercise, Bernedoodles can benefit from activities that stimulate their minds like puzzle toys or training. They love spending time with their people and will happily join in on family activities.
There is no one-size-fits-all answer to your question about how many minutes per day is ideal for training Bernedoodles. Depending on the age of the Bernedoodle, it's possible that anywhere from 15-30 minutes a day is sufficient. Also, it's important to take into account the Bernedoodle's individual temperament, attention span, and exercise needs. Some Bernedoodles respond better to longer, more intense training sessions, while others may be better suited to shorter, less intense sessions.
