Questions & Answers
Bernedoodles are a unique and fascinating cross between a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Standard Poodle. They are a hybrid breed of dog that combines the gentle, loving and loyal nature of the Bernese Mountain Dog with the highly intelligent, low shedding, hypoallergenic properties of a Standard Poodle. People who own Bernedoodles tend to have a stronger bond with their pups, thanks to their people-pleasing nature and enhanced intelligence. To provide structure and security, Bernedoodles require regular, consistent and routine training.
Bernedoodles can be prone to allergies just like any other breed of dog. The best way to manage these allergies is to first identify what your particular Bernedoodle is suffering from is it an environmental allergy or a food allergy? If you suspect it's an environmental allergy, you should consider changing their bedding and keep their environment free of dust or pollutants as much as possible. If you think it could be a food allergy, then there are several options for hypoallergenic dog foods as well as milder proteins and limited ingredient diets that might be more suitable solutions.
Bernedoodles typically do best when they are fed a high-quality kibble. When feeding a Bernedoodle it is recommended to look for formulas made with natural, high-quality ingredients that are free of fillers, by-products, additives, and artificial flavors or colors. Additionally, it may be beneficial to supplement their diet with fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as some proteins such as yogurt, cheese, or boiled chicken.
In order to prepare your home for your new Bernedoodle, it is important that you make the introduction period stress-free. Clear your home of any hazardous items such as small items that could be swallowed or chewed, potentially dangerous plants, and any items you do not want your pup to get a hold of. If you have any stairs in your home, make sure to block them off with a baby gate or something similar. Ensure that you have all of the necessary supplies like food and water dishes, and create a designated place for your pup to sleep.
Bernedoodles typically grow to be between 25 and 50 lbs. as an adult, depending on the size of the parent breeds. On average, a standard Bernedoodle will measure 22-29 inches tall from the top of their shoulder to the ground. The Mini Bernedoodle typically measures 18-22 inches tall and weighs between 20-45 lbs. as an adult. In comparison to other doodles, Bernedoodles tend to be on the larger side, although they are still considered to be a relatively smallto medium-sized breed.
It is recommended that Bernedoodles get at least 45 minutes to an hour of exercise each day, broken down into several smaller walks/play times. However, the actual length of each walk will depend on the size and energy level of your individual Bernedoodle. Generally, it is best to keep walking sessions to short, frequent intervals to keep your pup's energy level in check and prevent boredom. If you'd like to increase the intensity of the exercise for your Bernedoodle, you could add in interactive games, such as fetch, hide and seek, and agility courses.
Bernedoodles are strongly recommended as an excellent option for a family pet. These wonderful hybrid dogs combine many desirable traits of both Bernese Mountain Dogs and Poodles, like intelligence, loyalty, and a friendly, easygoing nature. Bernedoodles are usually friendly and gentle with children, making them an ideal choice for active families looking for a lifelong companion. Their intelligence and good humor allow them to be quickly and easily trained, ensuring a smooth transition into the household.
The amount of time needed to train Bernedoodles each day will vary based on the individual pup and their learning progress. However, in general, it's recommended to provide some type of training for at least 15 minutes a day. The more consistent you are with training, the faster your Bernedoodle will learn new things and commands. It's also beneficial to break up the training into several shorter sessions throughout the day, adding up to at least 15 minutes per day. Additionally, providing plenty of physical exercise will help keep your Bernedoodle healthy.
