Questions & Answers
Bernedoodles are a popular hybrid breed of dog that are created by crossing Bernese Mountain Dogs and Poodles. They have a two-colored coat of usually black and white, although sable and tricolor coats exist as well. Bernedoodles are highly intelligent, so they are easy to train and make excellent family pets. They also have a great temperament and rarely resort to barking. They do best with a moderate activity level and require brushing or clipping a few times a month, but overall are low maintenance.
Generally speaking, yes, Bernedoodles are non-shedding. This is because they are a mix of the Bernese Mountain Dog and the Poodle, both of which are breeds that don’t shed much. While Bernedoodles do shed a bit, it’s typically far less than that of a regular Bernese Mountain Dog or Poodle. Indeed, many Bernedoodle owners have reported having very little, to almost no shedding.
Knowing what to feed your Bernedoodle is an important part of being a responsible pet owner. Since it is a crossbreed of Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle, a Bernedoodle typically has a higher dietary requirement than many other types of dogs. For instance, Bernedoodles should not consume foods that are overly fatty, as these can lead to heart and/or kidney disease. Additionally, Bernedoodles should avoid foods that contain too many fillers, artificial flavors, sweeteners, or preservatives.
Preparing for a Bernedoodle is not much different than preparing for any other dog breed. Ensure that you have all the necessary supplies, like a collar with ID tags, a leash, a crate, food and water dishes, and food. You should also make sure to familiarize yourself with the breed and their specific needs, such as exercise needs and what type of activities you can do together. Talk to your vet for advice on nutrition, grooming supplies, vaccinations, and any kind of preventative care that is recommended for the breed.
Bernedoodles are considered a medium-sized dog breed, on average they grow to be anywhere from 18-30 inches tall depending on the parentage, and can weigh anywhere from 40-90 pounds when full grown. Some Bernedoodles may even exceed these heights and weights. The size of a Bernedoodle can also depend on individual genes and nutrition, so two Bernedoodles from the same litter can be different sizes.
Bernedoodles are highly active and energetic dogs. They typically require regular exercise to stay healthy and are not suited for a sedentary lifestyle. They not only need several daily walks, but also enjoy participating in outdoor activities such as agility courses and fetch. Bernedoodles are also mentally active and appreciate activities that stimulate their minds like puzzle games, obedience training, or even short hikes that allow them to explore. As long as they are kept active, Bernedoodles make wonderful companions and are guaranteed to bring joy to any household.
Bernedoodles are a highly intelligent and friendly breed, which makes them an excellent choice if you have young children in your home. Bernedoodles have a tendency to be loyal and protective towards children and are quickly bonded to them. They generally thrive on the attention from and interaction with children, and with gentle training and socialization, they can be the best playmate for your little ones. That being said, like all breeds, Bernedoodles should only be supervised when interacting with very young children or toddlers in order to ensure that they feel comfortable and safe at all times.
Training your Bernedoodle takes patience, consistency and positive reinforcement. First, get your Bernedoodle used to basic commands, like "sit", "stay", "come", and "off", by rewarding him with a treat each time he listens. Gradually reduce the treats until he is obeying these commands without them. As your Bernedoodle becomes more adept at the basics, try teaching him some more complex tricks and commands, such as "lie down" and "roll over". Be sure to reward him for successes with lavish praise and an occasional treat.
