Questions & Answers
Bernedoodles are unique, fun multigenerational crossbreeds that result from poodles and Bernese mountain dogs being bred together. They combine the intelligence and non-shedding characteristics of the poodle with the beautiful, gentle nature of the Bernese mountain dog. Bernedoodles come in three coat styles: straight, wavy, and curly. In terms of size, Bernedoodles range from toy to standard and can weigh from 10-100 lbs, making them ideal for a variety of living situations.
Although Bernedoodles can be hypoallergenic and have a lower shedding coat, it is impossible to guarantee that you won't be allergic. This is because there are multiple factors that can impact a person's allergy levels, such as environmental allergens, other pets and breed-specific triggers. Additionally, Bernedoodle coat types and allergy levels can vary depending on its lineage. It is always recommended to consult with your veterinarian before getting a pet if you are concerned about allergies and take the necessary precautions to look after your health.
Bernedoodles, like most dog breeds, require a balanced and healthy diet to maintain their size, energy level, activity level, and overall health. An optimal diet should include a high-quality dog food that is formulated for their age, breed, and activity level. To provide optimal nutrition, it's usually recommended to feed a combination of dry kibble and wet food, rotating between different protein sources. It is also important to supplement their regular diet with healthy treats and fresh vegetables or fruits. Bernedoodles should be fed two or three smaller meals per day to maximize nutrient absorption.
Preparing for a new Bernedoodle requires more than just purchasing some items for the pet. To give your Bernedoodle the best experience possible, start with researching the breed, such as its health, temperament, medical needs, and behavior. Familiarizing yourself with the different grooming needs and scheduling routine checkups with your veterinarian is highly recommended. Next, purchase necessary items such as food, bowls, leash, collar, bedding, and toys. Be sure to provide plenty of potty breaks and sufficient exercise opportunities for your Bernedoodle, as well as regular brushing and bathing.
Bernedoodles come in three size variations: miniature, small standard, and large standard. The miniature Bernedoodle is a cross between a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Miniature Poodle, typically weighing anywhere from 10-24 pounds. The small standard Bernedoodle is a cross between a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Standard Poodle, usually weighing between 25-49 pounds. Lastly, the large standard Bernedoodle is a cross between a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Standard Poodle, weighing over 50 pounds.
The exact number of minutes your Bernedoodle should walk each day will depend on its age, breed, size, and individual activity levels. Typically, a young and healthy Bernedoodle should be walked for at least 30 minutes a day, and some older and smaller pups may benefit from far less. If your Bernedoodle can handle it, 45 minutes to an hour of daily walks is ideal. Consistency is key the same amount of time and intensity should be used for each walk.
Bernedoodles are an excellent family dog and are usually very good with children. They love the attention kids give them, and they typically respond very well to playtime and cuddles with young ones. Bernedoodles can be friendly, patient, and enjoy interacting with kids and teaching them how to properly interact with dogs. They are highly adaptable and can fit into most family situations. With proper socialization, Bernedoodles can learn to get along great with children of all ages. They are loving and kind, so they make wonderful family companions.
The amount of training a Bernedoodle needs each day will depend on the age of your pup and the goals you have for their development. Generally speaking, a young Bernedoodle puppy (up to four months of age) should get around 15 minutes of focused active training every day, increasing to up to 30 minutes by the time they are six months old. While 30 minutes of active training per day is ideal for a young Bernedoodle, older dogs should get at least an hour of mental and physical stimulation daily.
