Questions & Answers
Bernedoodles are a designer crossbreed of two distinct dog breeds, the Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle (usually a standard poodle). This hybrid breed combines the intelligence of the Poodle with the calm, gentle, and loyal nature of the Bernese Mountain Dog. Thanks to their origin, Bernedoodles have become increasingly popular due to their friendly and affectionate personalities. Bernedoodles are typically hypoallergenic and shed less than an average dog, making them ideal for those who suffer from allergies.
Bernedoodles are known to be low-coats, which means they’re much lighter shedders than other breeds. Although Bernedoodles may shed very little hair, they are considered non-shedding; their coat generally contains only the natural oils and dirt found on their skin. While Bernedoodles do not shed as much as other breeds may, regular brushing and grooming is still essential for ensuring their coat stays healthy and optimal. Proper coat care can help minimize any shedding that may occur by loosening the dirt, oils, and dead hair that cause it.
Bernedoodles are typically accustomed to a high-quality diet with a balance of wet and dry food. Of course, as with any breed, all dogs are different and their diet should be tailored to their individual needs. Dry kibble is recommended as the main component of their diet, supplementing wet food for added nutrition and variety. When purchasing food for your Bernedoodle, be sure to look for a dog food made with quality, natural ingredients and avoid artificial additives. Include high-quality proteins, omega fatty acids, and optimal proportions of carbohydrates and fiber within their diet.
Becoming the best puppy parent starts with research and preparation. Educating yourself on the breed’s needs and behaviors is the foundation for a lifetime of success in raising a happy and healthy Bernedoodle. Learn about the vitamins, grooming needs, and training techniques specific to Bernedoodles as well as the behaviors to expect as they reach certain ages. Also, be sure to have a crate, bed, food, and toys ready for your pup as soon as it comes home.
The size of your Bernedoodle puppy will depend on the size of their parents, whether they are Standard, Mini or Toy in size. Furthermore, Bernedoodle puppies bred from Mini and Toy Poodles can range in size from 18 to 28 pounds when fully grown, while puppies bred from Standard Poodles typically range from 60 to 90 pounds. Ultimately, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer – your puppy’s size will depend on the genetic composition of its parents.
Your Bernedoodle's daily walking needs will depend on its age and overall health. Generally, puppies and younger dogs should get at least 30 minutes of exercise each day while older dogs may need slightly less. Of that daily 30-60 minutes, it's ideal to spend 15-20 minutes specifically on walking. During cooler months, you can divide up the exercise needs into two smaller walks of 10-15 minutes each – one in the morning and one in the evening.
Bernedoodles are a wonderful choice for any family looking for an affectionate and loyal pup. Not only are the beautiful and eye-catching, they are also smart and great with kids. Bernedoodles are very intelligent, and can learn quickly, so they're also great for families who need an obedient and well-trained family pet. Since they are also very affectionate, Bernedoodles are ideal for families that want a loving and devoted pet. They are also gentle and friendly, so they're great with other family pets too.
Training your Bernedoodle should be approached with patience, consistency, and positive reinforcement. Bernedoodle puppies can start training as early as 8 weeks of age. Start with basic commands such as sit and stay and don't move on until your Bernedoodle has mastered the current task. It's important to stay positive and keep the training sessions short and repeated often. When your Bernedoodle follows the command, make sure to reward good behavior with treats or praise. Additionally, socialize your Bernedoodle from a young age by taking them on walks and introducing them to people and other animals.
