Questions & Answers
Bernedoodles are a designer canine hybrid created by crossbreeding a Bernese Mountain Dog with a Poodle. They possess the intelligence of poodles and the affectionate, loyal temperament of Bernese Mountain Dogs. A Bernedoodle is friendly, gentle, and will make a great addition to an active family home. They come in various sizes, and their coat can range from full-length wavy curls to a more low-shedding, shaggy look. Because of their intelligence, Bernedoodles typically require more mental stimulation than other dogs.
The Bernedoodle coat is quite unique compared to other doodle breeds. Generally, the coat is a combination of its Bernese Mountain Dog parent's silky, long-haired coat and the Poodle's curly/wavy coat. This creates a beautiful, soft, wavy or curly coat. Depending on the generation, the Bernedoodle can range from having very minimal shedding to non shedding. Their fur tends to vary in length and type depending on the parents and the Bernedoodles generation. Bernedoodles require regular grooming in order to maintain a healthy coat and skin.
It really depends on your Bernedoodle and their dietary needs. Generally, it's best to feed a Bernedoodle a high-quality food that is designed for large-breed dogs, as their size and activity level should be taken into consideration. It should be grain-free and rich in protein, with healthy fats and omega fatty acids for the Bernedoodle's thick coat. Vitamin and mineral supplementation is also encouraged. Also, consult with your veterinarian to make sure your Bernedoodle is getting the exact nutrition they need to stay healthy.
Before getting a Bernedoodle, it is important to invest in some essential items to ensure your pup's well-being. First, get a quality food specifically formulated for large breeds. Next, get a size appropriate collar and leash, as well as harnesses and training aids if you plan on teaching your dog tricks or commands. Additionally, buy a few toys that meet your pup's chewing ability. A comfortable bed is another must-have, preferably with washable cover. Lastly, grooming products such as a brush and nail clippers are essential for Bernedoodles with their high maintenance coats.
Bernedoodles come in a variety of sizes. Standard Bernedoodles usually range from 23 to 29 inches tall and weigh around 55 to 90 pounds. Mini Bernedoodles, which are a mix between a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Mini Poodle, are usually 17 to 22 inches tall and weigh about 25 to 49 pounds. Micro Bernedoodles, a mix between a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Toy Poodle, are usually 12 to 17 inches tall and weigh around 10 to 24 pounds.
Generally speaking, Bernedoodles do love to swim! Although there is always an individual variability, the Bernedoodle is a generally active breed that loves physical activities and swimming happens to be one of its preferred activities. Most Bernedoodles enjoy paddling around in the water, splashing with their owners, and fetching toys they have thrown into the water. However, if your Bernedoodle is not used to swimming, it is important to start the process slowly.
Bernedoodles are widely considered to make excellent family pets due to their intelligence, loyalty, and affectionate personality. Not only are these designer dogs highly intelligent, but they excel in agility and obedience training, so they can be a great companion for both fun activities and obedience. Bernedoodles are also known for having a goofy, playful personality, which makes them great with children and people of all ages. They tend to get along well with other pets, and their low-shedding coat means less cleanup when spending time with them.
Generally speaking, you should aim to give Bernedoodles at least 30 minutes of exercise per day. Depending on the age and breed of the Bernedoodle, that number can increase. Physical exercise is great for dogs of any breed and age, as it allows them to remain active and agile, so incorporating additional activities and exercises into your training routine for Bernedoodles can be beneficial. Short daily walks, playtime, interactive activities, and swimming are all great exercises for Bernedoodles.
