Questions & Answers
A Bernedoodle is a hybrid breed between the English Bernese Mountain Dog and the Standard Poodle. These delightful Designer Dogs are a relatively new breed, first appearing in 2003. The Bernedoodle is a great breed for families, as these loveable pups have friendly, outgoing personalities and have an affinity for socializing. Bernedoodle's come in various sizes that leave everyone with an option; Micro, Toy, Miniature, and Standard. They also come in a color array of black, sable, and white that make them the perfect addition for your home.
Bernedoodles are not always hypoallergenic. Generally, Bernedoodle owners report that their allergies are minimal when compared to other breeds, but it is impossible to guarantee that any single Bernedoodle will not cause an allergic reaction in some people. The Bernedoodle's unique coat structure, which is a combination of two different breeds (a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle), plays a major role in a Bernedoodle's allergy level. However, while Bernedoodles can produce lower amounts of the dander that typically causes allergic reactions, they still produce some.
The best dog food for Bernedoodles will depend on the individual needs of the pet. Generally speaking, Bernedoodles require a diet that is rich in omega fatty acids and other essential nutrients. Opting for a diet that is made of fresh, whole ingredients is usually the best way to ensure that your Bernedoodle is getting all of the right nutrients in the right amounts. Additionally, supplements can be a great way to give your Bernedoodle the extra boost it needs to thrive.
Before you welcome your Bernedoodle into your home, it's important to make sure you have the items you'll need for your pup's care and comfort. A few essentials include a collar and leash, food and water bowls, a bed/crate and a chew toy for playing. Grooming supplies such as shampoo, brush, and nails clippers are also necessary for keeping your pup's coat and nails looking its best. To keep your pup active, a few interactive and puzzle toys would also be beneficial.
Bernedoodles are considered a large breed of dog. Depending on their parents (the Bernese Mountain Dog and the Poodle), they can stand up to 24 inches tall and can weigh up to 70 pounds. Both parent breeds are known for being very good-sized, so Bernedoodles can range from medium-large to extra large in size. Generally, this hybrid is larger than some breeds, however, they generally have a medium activity level, so they won't necessarily need as much space as you might think.
Generally, Bernedoodles love to swim and a Bernedoodle that has been exposed to a safe environment and taught good swimming habits can be an excellent swimmer. It is important to remember that, like any other breed, Bernedoodles should not be left unattended near water, and should not be forced to swim if they don't want to. Swimming can be a great exercise for Bernedoodles and is a good way to get them to cool down on a hot day. It can also help keep their coat healthy and break down mats and tangles.
Bernedoodles are generally excellent companions for children, as their gentle and loving personalities make them excellent playmates. They are loyal and affectionate to their owners, and they enjoy the energy and enthusiasm that kids possess. Not only are they loyal and friendly, but they tend to be calm canines, so they won't become overly excited and jump on kids in their eagerness to play. With proper socialization, Bernedoodles can also learn to accept other animals and new people, making them a great addition to family gatherings.
When training Bernedoodles, the amount of time you need to invest on a daily basis varies significantly depending on your goals and the dog's personality and breed characteristics. Generally speaking, you should plan to dedicate at least 10–15 minutes every day reinforcing commands and performing activities that will strengthen your bond with the Bernedoodle. Additionally, if you are introducing new commands or behavior, plan to add an additional 15–20 minutes each day to practice the new skill.
