Questions & Answers
Bernedoodles are a relatively new hybrid designer breed that combines the intelligence, loyalty and even temperament of the Bernese Mountain Dog with the low to non-shedding coat of the Poodle to create a sociable, easy-to-train family companion. Bernedoodles are considered a medium-sized breed, they have an affectionate nature, and a unique, hypoallergenic wavy or curly coat. They come in a variety of colors including black, brown, cream and white and they can be either Standard, Miniature or Toy size.
While Bernedoodles do not typically cause an individual to develop allergies, it's important to note that all dogs can present certain allergy-related symptoms to someone who may be sensitive or allergic. These can include sneezing, watery eyes, and itching. Bernedoodles, however, are considered to be hypoallergenic, meaning that their coats are less likely to produce dander, which means that the likelihood of having allergy-related symptoms is reduced.
Bernedoodles are adorable and loyal pups, so it's important to make sure they're getting the best nutrition for optimal health and happiness. The best dog food for a Bernedoodle should be made with high-quality ingredients, like organic meat, fresh fruits and vegetables, and omega-3 fatty acids. Look for products that adhere to the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) standards for nutrient levels. Furthermore, be sure that your Bernedoodle's food contains no artificial colors, preservatives, or flavors.
Before getting a Bernedoodle, you should make sure you have some essentials on hand to help make them feel comfortable in their new home. Start by getting a dog bed that is the right size for themnot too big and not too smallthat fits their preferences. Food and water dishes are a mustget durable, stainless steel ones that can easily be cleaned. Be sure to provide chew toys, a leash, a harness, and if they are going to be outside, a collar with tags. Don't forget a brush for grooming, especially if they have longer fur.
Bernedoodles can definitely be considered big dogs. This is due to their parent breeds Bernese Mountain Dog and Poodle both of which can weigh up to 100 lbs. When two typically large dog breeds are mixed together, the result is most often a Bernedoodle that can reach quite a large size when fully grown. Therefore, it's safe to say that Bernedoodles are big dogs, however, depending on the size of their parents, their height and weight may vary.
Whether or not you should take your Bernedoodle running depends on how active your pup is and if it is healthy enough to engage in such physical activity. Generally speaking, Bernedoodle dogs are quite active and love outdoor activity like running. However, due to their size, a Bernedoodle may require a shorter running route, making it necessary for the owner to adjust the running route in accordance with their Bernedoodle's capabilities. Therefore, consulting with a veterinarian to determine your Bernedoodle's physical abilities and health before taking on any running routine is a must.
Bernedoodles definitely make wonderful family dogs! They have the intelligence and affection of Poodles combined with the loyal and loving nature of Bernese Mountain Dogs. They are very social, making them the perfect canine family member for just about any household. Bernedoodles are also quite smart and eager to please, which means they can be quickly and easily trained. Bernedoodles tend to do well with children and get along with other animals too, further making them great for a family environment.
To get the most out of training Bernedoodles, they should have at least 30 minutes of active training plus additional time devoted to obedience practice, agility drills, and other forms of enrichment. When starting out, 10-15 minutes of active training is a good amount as it helps to prevent burnout and frustration on both sides. As the pup progresses, longer sessions (up to 30 minutes) are recommended. Of course, you can always break down the skills into two or three 10-15 minute chunks throughout the day if you find that more suitable to your schedule.
