Questions & Answers
A Bernedoodle is a designer hybrid breed of dog that is created by crossing a Bernese Mountain Dog with a miniature or standard sized Poodle. As a result, this breed combines the intelligence and low-shedding Poodle coat with the loyal and favorite Bernese Mountain Dog personality. Bernedoodles typically make great family pet companions and can even have hypoallergenic coats, making them great for those with allergies. They require moderate exercise and can adapt well to different environments, so they can make great dogs for active or more relaxed lifestyles.
The Bernedoodle coat is a unique combination of Bernese Mountain Dog and Poodle coats. It is a combination of both long and short hair, and the length of the fur varies depending on the type of Bernedoodle. With regular grooming, it can be kept relatively short and wavy, or it can be left to grow out into long waves or ringlets. Due to the mix of breeds the Bernedoodle can also have a variety of colors, ranging from the traditional black and white of a Berner, to any solid color or combination of colors that a Poodle may possess.
Bernedoodles have soft, curly coats that require a diet that is high in proteins and essential fatty acids to maintain that luxurious coat and help them stay healthy. That's why the best food for your Bernedoodle should be a high-quality kibble with at least 25% protein content and an ample amount of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids to promote a healthy and shiny coat. It should also include essential vitamins and minerals to help them stay active and strong.
Bernedoodles can be a wonderful addition to any family, but they do have some unique requirements to account for. Although they require physical exercise, socialization, and training, like all breeds of dog, Bernedoodles may need slightly more of all three due to its size and potential temperament. Grooming can also be more intensive than some other breeds due to its thick double coat, and regular brushing or combing is recommended to prevent mats or tangles. Bernedoodles also tend to be sensitive and gentle, but they still need firm, consistent leadership to ensure proper obedience.
Bernedoodles are considered to be a good size for a family pet, and while not as large as some other doll-breeds, they are not small either. Generally, they range in size between that of a medium and large breed of dog. Some may be closer to the larger size, while others may stay on the smaller end of the spectrum. Ultimately, Bernedoodles tend to be quite a bit larger than smaller breeds but generally do not reach the size of breeds such as the Great Dane or St. Bernard.
Walking your Bernedoodle is an important part of their daily routine, but how much is the right amount? It depends on a few factors. First, the age and size of your pup: for a full-grown Bernedoodle, at least 30 minutes of walking per day should be sufficient, while a puppy should get closer to an hour. Secondly, the climate: in hot climates, it's important to adjust the length and intensity of your walks; shorter and more frequent but less intense walks might be best.
Bernedoodles are an excellent choice for families due to their intelligence, loyalty and gentle disposition. They are known to be eager and affectionate, and their loyal and loving nature makes them very well-suited for family life. They are friendly and social around people, and can quickly become a beloved part of the family. Additionally, Bernedoodles are fairly low-maintenance due to their low shedding, are great with children, and have the intelligence to learn quickly.
Training a Bernedoodle is similar to training any other dog breed: patience and consistency is key. It's important to give your pup a positive and safe environment that is conducive to learning. Begin with teaching basic commands such as sit, stay, and come, using positive reinforcement, like treats or favorite toys. If there are certain behaviors you want to discourage, ignore them or use negative punishment. Once your pooch has mastered the fundamentals, you can move on to more advanced commands such as heel and perform tricks.
