Questions & Answers
Bernedoodles are a cross breed between a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle. They are loyal, intelligent dogs with a great sense of humor. Not only do they inherit the Bernese Mountain Dog’s great disposition, but they can possess the Poodle's non-shedding fur. Bernedoodles are very family-oriented, and also make great companions for children. Fun fact a Bernedoodle's average life span is around 13-15 years, making them a very long-lasting friend in your home.
Bernedoodles can be a great choice if you're looking for a pet that doesn't shed. Generally, Bernedoodles are considered to be a hypoallergenic breed because their fur retains the low shedding coats of their Poodle parents and the Bernese Mountain Dog's wiry coat. Of course, some individuals within the breed may shed more than others, so it might be smart to do a bit of research before bringing one home.
It is important to know what not to feed your Bernedoodle, as you want to keep them as healthy as possible. A good starting point is to avoid giving them table scraps or human junk food. While some treats may be fine as occasional snacks, they should not be given as a source of their primary nutrition. Diet should consist primarily of a good quality, complete and balanced commercial kibble specifically made for Bernedoodles. Avoid unspecialized diets or any not intended specifically for dogs, as these diets may lack important nutrients that Bernedoodles need for good health.
Preparing for a new Bernedoodle puppy is an exciting time! There are many things to consider and put in place ahead of time in order to make sure your pup has the best start possible. Make sure to talk to your veterinarian to ensure that your pup is up to date with their vaccinations and do research on the breed to learn more about Bernedoodle characteristics and common health issues. Consider getting a crate, food, bowls, and other supplies to ensure your pup has everything they need to feel comfortable in their new home.
Bernedoodles are often considered to be a bigger type of dog, as their standard size can reach heights of around 23-29 inches and typically weigh between 55-90 pounds. Although this type of breed is able to vary in size from a few pounds to even over 100 pounds for Giant Bernedoodles, they are still normally categorized as not quite a giant breed but not a small breed either. In general, Bernedoodles are often classified as medium-sized dogs and can usually be found in standard, mini, and micro variations.
Bernedoodles need regular exercise to stay healthy and keep their energy levels up. Physical activity is important to maintain their strength, agility, and balance. Depending on the age and size of the Bernedoodle, an ideal amount of exercise would range somewhere between 30 minutes to two hours a day. Always start slowly and reward with plenty of praise, treats, and love when the exercise is done. Exercise can be anything from walks, runs, hikes, swimming, agility courses, and even supervised playtime with their canine friends.
Bernedoodles can be great family dogs depending on their individual personalities, as with any breed. Generally, Bernedoodles are friendly, loyal, easy-going creatures who get along with everyone, including children. Bernedoodles are intelligent, adaptable to different living circumstances, and eager to please, all qualities that make them great family pets. They won't require hours of exercise but still have enough energy to enjoy activities like running and agility.
Training a Bernedoodle can be easy or difficult, depending on the individual dog's personality and the type of training methods used. Bernedoodles are a highly intelligent breed, so they can be trained fairly quickly. While they may take a bit longer to learn than some other breeds, they also tend to be extremely eager to please their owners, which makes it easier to form a positive relationship with them. The key to successful Bernedoodle training is to remain gentle and consistent in your approach. Positive reinforcement is generally the best way to reward desired behaviors.
